Upgrade the OS

Lurker
I was hearing a lot about Android for the past years and decided to take a look at a phone my friend gave me, he said it was a rooted Xperia X10 phone.

It comes with 2.1, and I understood that Google has made better versions 2.2 and 2.3, how to I upgrade to these versions? I though it would be an option of downloading something from the market, installing and rebooting, but it doesnt seem that way, I am confused as to why Google could have stuff like this organized and available.

Welcome!

Unfortunately you were mislead regarding the Google Android OS and the SE X10 phone. Yes Google is developing new versions of the Android OS but they have to be customized to individual phones and SE has advertised already they will not be upgrading the X10 past the current 2.1 version.

So you will never be able to get an SE developed version of Android 2.2 or 2.3 for your new phone...and if you were to be able to, that is the sort of update that comes directly from the SE website via their update utility SEUS, not in the market.

Fortunately there is a great development community for the x10 on this site and the XDA forums that has stepped up and are developing 2.2 and 2.3 ROM's to install on these phones. They're in development now and available for installation in BETA format as I type.

Do a search on here or go to XDA Forums for more infomation.

I'm running a beta 2.2 as of now. If you're already rooted, then you're already halfway there. Keep in mind, these unofficial roms are made by individuals in their spare time, and won't be perfect. zizhidu's 2.2 is close, but no video recording, and no scanning apps that use the camera. 2.3 by jerp isn't as far along, but thats ok, since 2.3 brings about mostly superficial changes, while 2.2 brings significant performance/features.

This is FreeX10, by zdzihu, its a 2.2 rom, its what I'm currently using. Read that 1st post carefully, to know the pros and cons of it.
[ROM] FreeX10 | BETA 4 - NEW BASEBAND FIX | Froyo 2.2.1 | 1/02/2011 | xRecovery - xda-developers

On the 2nd post, you'll find 2.3 by jerpelea. It's not as complete as the freex10 2.2, and the install is a bit more involved.

If you've decided you want to flash, I'd recommend going freeX10 2.2, its really easy to install, long as you know how to use xrecovery.
