Root Upgrade to SD Class 10 Worthwhile?

Hi,

depending what ROM you use and how you use your SD-Card, it definitely makes a difference. I run CTMod3.68 with koumakernel in DATA mode and I definitely felt the improvement from going from a class4 card to a class10..... The faster the card, the better is your performance.....

But as I said, it depends how you use the card, some people run their Prevails on class4 or class6 just fine. I have two Prevails ( only one in service ) and one has a class6 card and the other one has the 32GB / class10 in it. Same setup, same apps.... Both phones are totally identical set up, except for the size and class of the sd-card. And comparing both phones, the one running the class10 card is less lagging..........

Thanks. That specific card should work fine right? I think SDHC are all compatible, but I know there are a couple different types and can't remember them at this point

edit:
It looks like it should work afaik. My current card is a 32gb class 4 sandisk

Card arrived today. How do I need to transfer the data? Can I just do a straight copy in windows explorer? Not sure how it works with my root. Also, is there a utility I can use to test the speeds of the different cards?

Well, before you copy all your stuff, you might need to partition your card first for sd-ext in CWM Recovery ( or with the Kouma partition tool ), depending what ROM and setup you are using...... After that, copy like Rxpert said..........

Cool, make sure, after you partition and format the sd-ext on the new sd-card, that you boot up all the way and change to DATA and the "disable internal...." and THEN reboot into CWM Recovery and RE-FORMAT the sd-ext.... Then reboot system and it can take 10 - 15 minutes for the first boot ! After that, you can shut down your phone, take the card out and copy your stuff on it.

My oldcard is unpartitioned so I assume I don't need to do partition the new one, both are fat32 so I don't see why I'd need to format that. Do I understand these steps right - 1) Remove original SD, copy to computer 2) Insert new SD, enter recovery mode, format sd-ext 3) With new SD in, boot phone, set through the Kouma settings 4) Re-enter recovery, re-format the sd-ext 5) Remove new SD, copy from computer, put into phone

Well, you said you are rooted and run CTMod3.68 with Koumakernel in DATA mode !! This means, your SD-Card is partitioned. You have a FAT32 partition and a sd-ext ( which is used to install your apps and acts like internal memory ! ) You can specify the size of the sd-ext in CWM when you partition the card. Then you need to format the sd-ext.....boot up, check the settings in the CTMod>>>Koumasettings, that it is set to DATA ( and the checkmark), then you NEED to reboot into Recovery and re-format the sd-ext and reboot !! this way, your card is setup for the Kouma settings ! then you shut down the phone, take the card out and put it in your computer to copy the things you had on your old card to the new one !

And the steps are pretty straight forward, except, I'd boot up fully after Step 4 , then shut down the phone and copy the stuff from your old card to the new one !!

Yes you're right, I forgot about partitioning and that windows won't see the sd-ext. I don't remember what my old size was, but I just partitioned the new one to 1024 which should have enough space I guess I'm not really sure how to copy the data from that partition on the old card to the new one. I'll just post back when I have results of some sort

You could just do a CWM backup with the old sd-card, then copy the backup to your computer ........ and once the new card is partitioned, you could copy the clockworkmode folder in CWM back to the sd-card and do a restore !

Thanks for all your help. This is exactly what I did once I realized what was going on and thought about it instead of just panicking. The restore is going now. I had just completely forgotten about the extra partition which fundamentally changes how everything fits together. Everything works now and I have a better understanding of the systems involved. I would say that the phone appears to have booted faster. I took some benchmarks using my computer that I will post

If you don't partition the card there is no sdext to format and you will not benefit from the extra storage ;)

(If you're already using data mode, and the card IS partitioned, you will need to make a backup in cwm and once you insert the new, partitioned card.... you just restore the backup you made to transfer the sdext to the new card. This is because the partition is formatted in a way that windows won't see it. So copying the card to the computer will NOT transfer/copy the sdext)

COOL !!! Very good decision with the backup !! ;)

Glad I could help........Just post if you run into any troubles ( but you shouldn't ) !!!

Here are the results of the three cards I've used in my phone. The one I just upgraded from, the new one, and the one that came with the phone. Elsehwere someone referred to the Random Read/Write 4KB (QD=32) being most important for what we are doing. This is more anecdotal but TeraCopy reported 4mb/s with the old and 10mb/s with the new while I was copying the backup

The phone definitely feels more responsive which to me is worth the 20 bucks, and transferring files will be much faster as well. Plus I have someone to pass along the old card to who just wants it for storage.

Hopefully those test results can help people in the future. From what I'm seeing even my slower class 6 card outperforms ones that are even rated higher, and the class 10 beats many others. And that stock card, don't even both with it if you're running anything off the SD

I had completely forgotten about the extra partition, and since I'm running Windows I never see it like you said. I would assume it would be visible in Linux. I wonder if I could see it within a VM. I have to figure out how to repartition it like a new card for its new owner anyhow. I'm really not as computer illiterate as my posts on these forums would lead you to believe, I just haven't spent hardly any time with Android and its been at least a year since I worked with Linux/OSX. Getting my phone rooted I just followed the guides like a sheep which meant that when something changed or went wrong, I needed hand-holding to get it fixed

You can just boot into cwm, select partition and choose 0 for both numbers. The card will then be back to normal.

Here I go trying to do things the hard way again, and it's that simple. These tools are much more powerful than I realized. I was going to use GParted which might not be a bad idea for messing with it in the future.

Do you happen to know why CWM only lets the partition go up to 4096?

Guess the developer who created CWM thought the 4096 are enough.

And believe me, you'll never need more than that !!! I used 4096, but now, with 119 apps installed, it only uses like 615MB !!! So unless you need like 500+ apps, I'd only use 1024 or max 2048 !!!
