upgrade xbox 360 slim 4GB

I had to buy the 4GB slim because they were all out of the 250 gigs in my area. Matter of fact the closest one to me was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and I didn't feel like waiting for the new shipments to arrive.

Now my question is, do I have to buy the standard xbox 250GB hard drive or can I get like a custom 600GB or something. I remember watching some youtube videos a while back where somebody installed a custom drive on the 1st gen PS3.

Will this also work with the xbox slim?

If not, are the generic brands just as good? I saw a few on amazon starting in the $60 price range. Has anyone had a good experience with the generic models?

No, Microsoft you have to use the Hard Drives it sells...

Yea it looks like it but I still don't want to pay $125 when I can get basically the same thing for half the price.

I found a few reviews on Amazon that claims the generic brand works just as good but I'll keep digging.

NO NO! there is no hack. any USB hdd will work! When you plug it in it will ask you to format and it might update your xbox, but it doesn't matter as long as it's a USB HDD! So any custom drive will work! Im a dork and know these things!

I didn't want to risk getting banned using a non authorized HD so I just coughed up the $129 for the OEM 250 gig HD. I should of waited, I ended paying more for my bastardized Xbox LoL

The custom hard drive on the ps3 is a laptop hard drive [i forget the size] and it only works on ps3

People have been using the older 20gb, 60gb and the 250gb HDD's off of the non slim 360's. You have to rip them out of the plastic crap the are in but once that is done they will drop right into your xbox or you can buy a cheap HDD housing for like $10 off ebay so it fits in there like it should. As far as I know no one has been banned for swapping out HDD's but I'm sure Microsoft can detect this. Whether or not they decide to ban consoles for it is unknown still.

Whatever you do though don't use a HDD put out by anyone other than what comes with a 360 old or slim.

I dont think microsoft can detect that only when you disconnect you dvd drive in game or your playing with out one

They can detect different verison/firmware types. A lot of people were wanting to drop in laptop HDDs are they are much cheaper but you will get yourself caught fast. Haven't heard of any new slims getting banned yet but they might just wait like last time and take out a whole slew of people like last time. Think they got just under 1 million for having hacked xboxes.

I also heard that you can only use the offical drive sizes for the xbox to recognise so you cant have like 999gb you could only have whats available already

To be honest with ya it shouldent matter because its a hard drive its not technicly a hardware modification

Don't matter to MS. Its their equipment and they keep tight control over it. Using anything other than approved MS drives is considered modifying your console.

Aren't you limited to a 13 gig partition regardless of how large the drive is?

Hi, so are you able to play old XBOX games?

I was reading that only the offical Microsoft 250GB (and up?) HD are backwards compatable.

Gamestop gave me $100 for my 2006 360 which I then turned around and bought the 250GB holiday bundle from them; Halo: Reach, Fable lll, 3 months XBL gold, and a $60 Gamestop gift card, all for $214. Not a bad deal if you ask me. Considering I was originally going to buy the wireless adaptor for my old xbox for $80-$100.
