Root Upgrading Android Version

I'm new to messing around with the operating system of Android phones. I've managed to successfully root my phone with much help from you guys here. Now, I have another project in mind if it's even possible.

My question is, is it possible to upgrade my system from Jelly Bean to something newer? If so, how is it done and what are the pros/cons of doing it?

in short no, you cant upgrade. This phone was released over a year ago and definitely wont get an official update. Unless there is a dev willing to put the effort and create a working ROM, we wont see anything better than 4.1.2.

Oh well. The main thing 4.1.2 wouldn't let me do that I really wanted to do was move apps to the SD card. Rooting it and using Link2SD solved that problem. I'm just poking around to see what makes it tick now. I'm going to be getting a new phone pretty soon anyway.
