Help upgrading firmware

Hello guys, im a new here and i just brought samsung galaxy s GT-I9000 last week.

Last night i try to upgrade my phone with the latest firmware. But, what is happened is my apps,contact (thank god i already backup in my email) and my message is disappear.

My question is, is there anyway to upgrade the firmware without losing all installed apps? what i read , 2.2 will be in this September and i dont want to loss my apps this time.

Use a backup tool like Titanium Backup or MyBackup Pro

Problem is, you cannot backup sms messages, contacts, mini diary entries, or any other pre-installed apps without rooting your phone first.

there is an app in marketplace called easy root most phones work with it but it checks first and lets you know.

Go to the xda developer forum. There's a massive FAQ thread on rooting i9000 phones. Read that first.
