Help Upgrading from 2.1.1

I have android 2.1.1 on my galaxy S and i finally thought of upgrading it. I was only able to find solutions of upgrading from 2.3.3. I tried with that one, but i am stuck when i have to enter downloading mode (home+down+power). my phone just starts to show logo and inscripiton- galaxy S. Then it disappears and appears over and over again.
Anybody can help me with updating such old OS?

press and hold the home button down first firmly, than press power button and hold to enter download mode

than flash your latest rom

Still, i just see galaxy logo over and over again. if i stop holding these buttons it just turns on normally.

May the mobile networks block download mode and etc.?

Networks can lock phones under contract

Can you give this a try again

do a battery pull first, reinsert battery, than press Volume Down hold + press Home hold + than Power hold till you enter download mode..give it a try

To enter recovery mode, shut down your phone and wait for it to be completely turned off then (do a battery pull) you hold the Volume Up + Home + Power and when you see the screen flicker with the B&W logo of SGS let go of the power button

if all fails

try Vol Up + Vol Down > Insert USB cable after about 1s -> Press Vol Down even though it tells you to press Vol Up to enter download mode

Nothing really happens, no download mode at all.
