Root Upgrading Kernel?

JennRN

Newbie
So I rooted my Eris and am using Xtrasense. I was reading on a blog, that to increase performance and stability, I should upgrade my kernal. My Kernal version is 2.6.29 zanfur@gandalf #46 PREEMEMPT May 10, 2010. I'll be honest, I don't really understand what a Kernal is, if I really do need to upgrade but was just asking for advice. If I do, can someone simplify the steps for me?
Thank you.

The very simplified version is that the Kernal is what interacts with the hardware of the phone and the software. It is the bridge between the two. Running xtrSense, you shouldn't need to update or change your Kernal.

100% agree. I have tried alternate kernels with xtrSENSE and have had stability issues (i.e., the phone hangs, requiring a battery pull.)

And the pedant in me wants to point out that it is spelled "kernel". The kernel is the core functioning component of a computer operating system; in this case, Android uses a Linux kernel.

Also, I just checked the links to the kernels that I'd recommend - Conap's BFS and CFS kernels - and they are not live. If you really want to try one of them, let me know, and I can post a link to download (I still have them, I think.)

But, the instructions would be:

- download the kernel .zip file and copy to your SD card
- restart the phone in Amon_RA recovery
- Nandroid backup (important, because you may want to go back to what you have now)
- wipe dalvik cache (do not wipe data/factory reset)
- flash a zip from SD card, and choose the kernel .zip file
- restart the phone.

Whoops, yes, kernel. It was early here. :p

Thanks, the funny thing is, since I rooted the phone, I've had 3 instances where the phone froze, another where it just restarted itself. I had to pull the battery for when it froze. Is this something that can be fixed/checked?

Have you changed any of the overclock settings? Be default, xtrSENSE runs at 710 MHz for a maximum speed. Almost every Eris can run that fast, but some people had phones that could not.
