Upgrading phone, what's the procedure?

Hi Guys,

I'm changing from HTC Wildfire to Samsung galaxy s3

Is it a case of just swapping my sim to new phone or do I have to manually input the changes, ie, internet etc.

Also, how do I keep old number, is this the old sim?

Sorry, I'm not very technical as you can tell, any advice would be welcome
 
The number moves with the SIM. You'll have to enter your Google login to connect to your Play Store account. The SIM just defines your phone number (you can store contacts on it, but that's not the default and is fairly limited). If your contacts are synced with Google they will download to the new phone, and if you have the option to back up app data to Google enabled a lot of other stuff will too.

However, despite being a bigger phone the S3 will take a smaller SIM. The simplest solution to that is probably to ask your provider to give you a micro-sim to replace your current sim.

The S3 uses a microSIM so, if you're not getting a replacement from your network carrier you'll need to cut the existing one down to size.

The phone should detect the network and configure the correct APN settings itself. Sign in with the same Google account and your contacts, calendar, etc will sync to the new device.

Also, how do I keep old number, is this the old sim?

The phone number remains tied to the SIM unless you request a replacement from your network, in which case the old one will be deactivated shortly after the new one goes active and the number 'transferred' to the replacement.

with your old phone still active... make sure google account is being backedup/synced. do one last sync.. so that all your contacts and calendar and stuff are at google.


so when you log in your google account on the new device.. everything is automatically synced back down to your new device. easy!!!

of course.. all this requires internet access

The easiest way to check this is to log into your gmail account from a PC and see if all your contact/calendar information is there. If it is they you are good. If not, on your phone go to menu>settings>accounts and select your primary gmail account and turn sync'ing on for the things you want backed up.

One thing to note is that Google's sync does not backup text messages or other email accounts, so if you want to save any of that, you'll need to use an app to do that. There are several decent one's in the play store that we could recommend (SMS backup and restore comes to mind, right off the top of my head.)
 
I know you will laugh as I am complete novice, but does this also transfer all my photos and downloads?

If not, how do i do this please?
 
Nothing to laugh about, especially with possible data loss (and the potential for crying when it happens ;) ).

All your photos, downloads, media files, etc. will be stored in folders that are accessible for copying, but they may not be backed up. You can set google to store a copy of your pictures in the cloud (Picassa) and you might already be doing that. Again go to your Google account on a PC and look for images. If your phone images are there, then they are saved. Of course they won't automatically sync back to the new phone.

Another way is to plug in your phone using the USB cable and copy the files to your PC manually. Your camera images will be in DCIM, unless you move them around, but all your files should be there somewhere. There may be backup apps that will do this for you too, but I don't know if I can recommend one. I don't use them.

BTW, if you are keeping your Wildfire, then just because you pulled the sim card doesn't mean you can still access all the files on it. There's no need to reset it until you are confident you have everything off that you want to keep.

Think I might try this way, as I have done this before with my HTC. However, what do you mean by DCIM? as that's what I really want from the old phone?
 
there might be some pics in the "download" folder too

NOTE:
you only need to look in the mem/storage of the phone.
not the SD card memory. since you are moving this to the new phone.
you could also move the files from internal memory to the SD card.
