Can I just copy the files to my desktop, swap cards, and copy back
yes, just make sure the new card is formatted first.
You've been lucky then. A card (or any storage medium) has be formatted. In your case, yours just happened to be formatted correctly. I would never recommend just assuming that the card is properly formatted as Android doesn't support every type of filesystem out there and formatting doesn't take any time. Format the card while in the device.I've never formatted an sd card and never had a problem.

It seems to me that because so many of you have read that the card needs to be formatted you just assumed it was true and are simply repeating the same info to others with absolutely no proof.
The thing is, its not that difficult, and takes less than 5 minutes. Stop saying you dont need to format, if people want to do it they will.
Perhaps a statement from Toshiba creates some clarity ...
Is it necessary to format my SD memory card before using it?
(Applicable product: SD/SDHC/SDXC UHS-I/microSD/microSDHC cards)
Toshiba SD memory cards are pre-formatted based on the specifications stipulated by the SD Association. They are ready for use on a PC.
However, on devices that have a format function, such as cellular phones or digital cameras, you must reformat your SD card before use. (Please consult the manual for your device.)
Do not format your SD card using your PCs standard format function.
Your memory card may no longer be recognized by your device.
