Upgrading to highter android versrion?

According to Sony, the Xperia PLAY won't get Ice Cream Sandwich. Since Honeycomb appears to be tablet-only, you won't see that either.

In regards to Xperia PLAY, after extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich – therefore, we will not make the Android 4.0 upgrade available for Xperia PLAY.
Update on Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia™ smartphones

The Xperia Play was sadly a failed experiment. These were the dark days for Sony. There were no phones updated to recent versions of android. There was also a huge lack of developer support, and from what I remember, any dev builds broke much of what made the Play unique.

My personal advice: Download a custom launcher, enjoy the Play for what it is, and avoid all Sony phones going forward.

Is it true that Sony Ericsson went bankrupt?

I will only try it if the % of getting bricked are really low.. i dont want to mess up my phone and loose everything

You will lose everything regardless. Flashing a custom ROM requires a full wipe every time. There are ways to partially restore, but some things/settings may be lost until you set them back up. Just do some research and decide if rooting is for you or not.

Xperia Play could have been a great device but Sony effed it up.No worthy Play specific games, weak hardware even for the time, no updates, utter failure by Sony.
