Hi all. this might be the wrong place to ask if, it is can the admins move it to the correct forum.

I have a samsung galaxy tab 2 3g (p3100)
it currently is running 4.0.3
I wish to upgrade to vers 5.
I am not adversed to doing the upgrade, however using the firmware by CW requires me to root the device.
Issue I have is I use a PAYG card service that will not run on a rooted device for security reasons.
If I do the upgrade, will I be able to remove the root after the procedure?
Many thanks in adavnce.
Marc

What is checking whether the device is rooted? I didn't think a SIM card would be able to do that, so is this some app that you rely on to make the connection that also includes a root checker? If it's something in the OS then installing a custom ROM (which I assume is the plan here) will remove it, as the ROM will replace all system apps.

The app that is the issue is Zinc from Wolrdpay. This is a PAYG credit/ debit card payment system that uses a bluetooth attached chip&pin unit. http://tinyurl.com/qy6zabm
Due to a rooted device being allowed/ able to gain details from a debit/ credit card, the app will not run. It is not an issue with the sim. To install the CW mod requires the device to be rooted.
Reason for doing the upgrade is that some of my other app's are updating and for whatever reason saying my 4.0.3 is not compatible. I can live without those app's but not the Zinc. Just thought it would be nice upgrade

OK, I understand.

The problem isn't that you need to root to install a custom ROM (you just need a custom recovery for that, which technically can be installed without rooting), but that custom ROMs come pre-rooted. If I knew exactly what this app checks for I'd be able to suggest a way of fixing it (e.g. if it checks for the presence of the superuser binary then removing that would presumably solve the problem).

If you were thinking of CyanogenMod (*), CM12 has options to manage root access built in. However, I don't know whether that would prevent Zinc from flagging the device as rooted. Also I don't think there is an official CM12 for that device at the moment: according to the links from this page (assuming I've got the right device) the last stable release for it is CM10, and the development releases are still CM11, and I'm pretty sure both of those are conventionally pre-rooted, as would pretty much any other custom ROM be. It's quite likely that the ROM can be modified to allow Zinc to run on it, but there might be an element of trial and error in doing that.

Of course what you should do before rooting is make sure you know how to return the device to stock. That way if you can't get Zinc working with a custom ROM you can revert to a ROM it can work with.

(*) I mention CM because I misread "CW mod" as "CM" when I first posted this. There are of course other custom ROMs for most popular devices.

Thank you @Hadron I have looked at this and TBH, the gains of having Lollipop over ICS isnt going to be sufficient for the 3 apps i want to keep running. I am going to stay with ICS for the foreseeable future. I have got a Samsung S5 with lollipop so the 3 apps i need can be run on that. Even with the larger screen on the S5, my Tab 2 still wins on what I need, even if I do look like Dom Jolly when I use it as a phone...LOL
