upload to windows8

I have a Samsung galaxy 4 and am trying to upload them to my computer. when I plug the phone into the computer it doesn't recognize my phone. how do I get windows 8 to recognize my phone to upload pictures? I have tried going to file manager but it isn't showing up.

First, make sure you've installed the Samsung driver. You can either go to Samsung's site, download it and install it, or download Kies and use its Tools menu to reinstall the drivers.

It's surprising that Windows didn't ask you about installing drivers. Are you using the original USB cable that came with the phone (or another one known to work to transfer data with cellphones)? And are you plugging it directly into a USB port on the computer, not into a USB hub (some of which cause problems)?
