Is it doing this automatically, or are you using Kies to manage the phone via the PC? You should just be able to mount the phone as a USB Storage device on the PC when you plug it in.
When it's plugged in, can you pull down the notification bar on the phone and see if there's a USB Storage option?

I wasn't having any trouble getting the USB storage option on the phone, it was what happened next but I figured out this was a problem with my PC, not the phone!
I simply used Roxio (the software on my computer, I'm not familiar with Kies) to 'transfer' pictures rather than 'import' which was grabbing every photo ever viewed on the phone.
