Help Uploading/Sending Videos... WITHOUT Wifi or External Internet Source

Hi everyone :D

Kind of a simple question - but one that still has had me perplexed no matter what I have tried to rattled my brain trying to think of a solution.

I have a Droid2, and I work for a company that requires Video Blogs to be uploaded weekly. I just moved into a new home, and have no Internet/Wifi source yet, and honestly don't want to pay for service if I can avoid it at all!

*Is there any way, method, service, or application that would allow me to Upload & Send videos and large files, just using the native 3G data connection from my Droid2!? (Through email, to Face Book, to YouTube)

I have heard of YouSendIt and DropBox, but think it is all still dependent on the phone itself? THANK YOU SO MUCH!

PS: As a last resort, would it work to use my other Smart Phone, an HTC Touch Pro 2, to share its signal as a 3G hotspot, and have the Droid2 use THAT signal as a 'Wifi?'
 
i was thinking about the same thing, using another phones hotspot as wifi and uploading youtube videos. im going to try it with mine and my wifes phones and ill let you know what happens.
 
I've always had problems trying to send video or large files via email on my droid. Youtube takes forever. But I have used Dropbox to upload videos to, using only 3G. There's a Dropbox app in the market. It's still kind of slow but it works. Lol For example, it took about 5 minutes to upload a 30mb video (about 1 minute long).

I'm not sure if you would be able to use the other phone's signal, but if your Droid2 is rooted, why not use it for tethering and send the videos from your pc or laptop?

Please let me know how it goes!! :) Although of course MUCH slower, maybe it will still 'see' the other phones wifi broadcast as acceptable, and upload/send the video through email or to Face Book/You Tube etc? I don't mind even if I'm sending a 75mb file, and it takes 2 full hours, I will just set the phones next to each other, plugged in, and do some chores around the house. I just DON'T want to take on another bill every month with DSL/Internet at home :)

First of all, THANKS for the above idea I bolded! I also have an HTC Touch Pro 2, and could even use that as the internet source I suppose, I should have already thought of this, sometimes the most obvious solutions escape us, DOH! I have a Netbook and 2 Smart Phones, so I'm sure it can be done.

Also, MY DROID 2 ISN'T ROOTED :( I have yet to find a one-click Droid2 specific root app/program, and sad as it is to admit, I am not interested in reading pages of instructions just to open up the 3G wifi sharing on my phone.

Dropbox works!? AWESOME!! I thought this might be a cool solution. Oh, and BELIEVE ME, 5-10minutes for a 30mb file isn't bad AT ALL where I'm coming from :) At some point down the road, I am going to have to get Internet at home I suppose, use my PS3 to it's full potential with Netflix and Need 4 Speed Hot Pursuit and all ;)

So... Dropbox allows unlimited file sizes and it's free? THIS is at least a great temporary solution.

I see. LOL Have you tried PdaNet for tethering to your laptop? You don't have to be rooted, and it works pretty well. Also in the market, if you want to check it out.

And yes, Dropbox works! I love it. I set up a folder to share with a friend of mine, to transfer files, videos, pics, music etc. The app is really simple. It's not unlimited. Only the 2gb plan is free. But they have some other plans available if you need more.

I have actually used both Dropbox and PDA Net in the past, but I ended up not using Dropbox at all after the first day, because although ingenious and user-friendly, I just didn't have a need for it at that point in time. PDA Net was alright, it worked, but I got a little frustrated with the other complimentary file I had to download onto my Netbook in order for it to work. That kind of seemed counter-intuitive, since how can I download a file on my computer, IF I'M USING PDA NET in the first place to GET an Internet connection on my computer!? Haha ;)

Lastly, about the Dropbox 2gb Plan... is that 2gb of active archived data in my folder, or, can I transfer all the data I please, and once it shows up on my Netbook's folder, simply extract it onto my desktop and no longer be using my 2gb limit? :)

Haha I thought about that too. But when you install PdaNet on your phone, it gives you the option to download the desktop file on the browser on your phone. From there, you could just transfer the file to your netbook via usb. Problem solved!

Yes, as soon as you move it your netbook, it won't be using up the space in the folder anymore. It just can only hold 2gb at a time.

THIS IS AWESOME NEWS! It's Christmas Eve, and hearing that Dropbox doesn't limit you to a TOTAL transfer of 2gb, and rather stored data all at one time, is a big relief and bit of good news. Shouldn't I be more excited about presents at this point? HAHA! :)

Although..... after giving it more thought, I kind of skipped over the most obvious solution of all: Simply hooking my Droid2 up to my Netbook after filming, and then upload to Face Book or You Tube from my Netbook using PDA Net. DOH.

PPS: You've been so hugely helpful thus far, I was wondering if you might know of any one-click root programs for the Droid2 that will simply enable wifi hotspot sharing? I want to de-wire my life as much as possible... and after buying the latest and greatest Smartphone on the market, didn't think it would be this hard, haha. *I just saw on the Android Market that Wifi Tether by Barnacle required Rooted phone, BUT it advertises allowing to get Xbox (and other consoles!?) online!!! Anyone know anything about this.

Yes! I used the Super One Click program
here. It's by far the most simplest way I've found to get root access.
Download the latest version (v1.5.5), and watch the video. Super easy!

Sorry! I've never tried to tether an xbox, so I can't help you there.

I "tipped" this since it was so helpful and well laid out! THANK YOU! You made it easily understandable and even linked me to the most recent software version to do it all.

The only reason I have been crippling the true power of my Droid2 all this time is because I thought there wasn't a 1-click out there. MAJOR THANKS.
 
I didn't see an option to mark the thread as "Solved," but it has been with the great help of the members here!

In this thread alone, I have learned how to One-Click Root for the Droid2, AND received more than one option for uploading videos WITHOUT wifi at home!
 
In case anyone else finds this thread in the future when they search, the other easy, one click option for rooting is Z4root, which is easily found with a quick google search. (I believe it's been pulled from the market)

Have you tried both, and do you have a preference over the other? As long as it is simple, one click, and streamlined, I don't care which one it is :) Thanks for the suggestion.

PS: The Google result displayed many links saying this unlock app was fake.

DROP BOX WORKS

BUT ONLY over Wifi :(

I am doing it now as we speak, wow, what a simple way to always keep important files on my home PC - I just had to come back by and say thank you, and let everyone know it works and works very well!

(now all I have to do is figure out how to root, send emails over wifi, and and use my D2 as a 3G hotspot after rooting, and I'm 100% good to go!)

The people who said it's fake are most likely new (or stupid) android users. If you read ANY forums about rooting apps, it's quite apparent that on some phones, rooting apps need to be run several times before they work exactly right (I've done mine twice and it worked flawlessly the first time, both times). Also, there's no such thing as a truly universal rooting app (or any other kind of app).. There are limitations to what software can do on WIDELY varying hardware platforms. I found z4root in a thread on xda developers, one of the most widely regarded android websites on the internet. The app worked fine for me, first try, and I haven't had an issue since. It's literally two clicks (allow super user permissions... then root) Also, z4root has a one click un-root option, in case you need to take your phone to the store for service, as well as a temporary root option, which leaves your phone rooted until the next time you reboot it.

I have not used both apps, I found z4root first, and since it was so easy and useful (and I still have the .apk on my SD card), I don't see any need to switch.
 
Thanks for that great explanation! I too really enjoy and even revere XDA! :) Next time I am at a personal computer I am going to root, I can't wait. All I'm really doing this for is Wifi 3G sharing... but I'm sure a plethora of other awesome advantages exist I am unaware of :)
 
Let's see, things I do that I couldn't without root:

Use Titanium Backup to freeze all the stock bloatware, improving performance and extending battery life.

Use SetCPU to scale my processor back when the screen is off, or when the battery is too hot, again extending battery life AND improving performance.

Use Autokiller to use the built in Android processes to efficiently (and properly) kill empty/background apps when free RAM approaches certain levels (my free RAM almost never drops below 200MB) Again, improving performance and improving battery life.

Of course wireless tethering (though I've used it less than you'd think, it's just nice to have the option, should the need arise)

I'm sure there's other stuff I'm forgetting.

With all those apps/settings, my battery is good for 2-3 days of light usage, and one to one and a half of very heavy usage, and scores in the low 1600s in Quadrant tests. All on the stock ROM.

You can use your Droid2 HEAVILY and have it last at MINIMUM a full day without plugging it in with these modifications!?

AWESOME :) I really am missing out.
 
Hi, just a quick semi-related question...

I tried using the Wifi Router App for Rooted Users, and it flashed a message as it opened saying I didn't have 'access control,' so that feature was being disabled. What does that mean? Am I not properly rooted?

Perhaps I should go back and start all over again... would that mean I should re-root/Un-root and start from scratch, or simply hook up tethered to laptop and try again?

The Wifi App 'works,' however its an extremely slow connection... but then again for some reason my Droid2 is slow as a snail at home and my TouchPro2 is FAST... but both are from Verizon, being used in the exact same place with exact same 3G signal.
