Urgent problem....desperately seeking solution

My apologies in advance for a rather lengthy backstory, but I want to ensure I provide as much info as possible to try and figure out why this is happening.

My girlfriend and I moved from Chicago to North Carolina about 10 months ago for her graduate program. We both got new phones around the time of the move. She got a Samsung Galaxy S, and I got a LG L9. We've had zero issues up until this past month. We both kept our same numbers and area codes.

My girlfriend received a call from a classmate of hers. Upon answering the call, there was no one at the other end of the line. Before she could try to call that individual back to see what was up, the phone rang again......no reply on the other line. This went on for 60+ calls. The number kept redialing and redialing my girlfriend's phone. After a while, my gf simply took the battery out of her phone, waited about an hour, put it back in, and the calling stopped.

Several weeks later we were out at a bar. We met some people and swapped numbers with them. I entered a girl's number into my contact list and then called her so that she'd have my number and be able to store it. Immediately after I ended that call, her phone now started to dial mine. I looked at this girl confused because I could see the phone in her hand and she was not calling me. I declined the call and thought nothing of it. 10 seconds later her phone kept auto-dialing mine again with no connection if I accepted the call. I tried powering off and on my phone (both immediately and with a 5 minute wait time). I also took out my battery on another attempt. No dice. Every time my phone reconnected to the network the calling continued from her phone. Since we had a few beers in us it was amusing at the time. Despite us each deleting each others numbers from our phones as a last-ditch effort, her phone still continued to dial mine. 60+ calls later and a full voicemail inbox of blank messages, it finally stopped.

Two days ago my girlfriend received a call from another friend. Again, she picked up the phone and there was no answer on the other line. This number proceeded to auto-dial my gf's phone about 50 times. We rushed to our nearest T-Mobile store, and the employees were all baffled. We temporarily put that number on the call block list. We waited a few minutes while talking with the employees. My gf then decided to unblock the number, at which time the associate changed the sim card right away. The calling mysteriously stopped, but I do not know whether or not it was due to the block list or change of sim card....or if the calling simply stopped mysteriously on its own like the prior two incidents. We left the store scratching our heads.

This evening I called my manager after work, and she didn't pick up. She called me back, and I missed the call. When I finally called her back again the phone went to voicemail, and I hung up. Right away my phone started ringing. I optimistically thought it was my manager finally getting in touch with me, but nope...nothing on the other line. Her phone kept dialing and dialing. No matter if I let the call go to voicemail or denied it, it kept calling. I again tried taking out the battery, shutting the phone off, and even putting the phone on airplane mode. The calls kept coming. I finally was able to call my manager back while the calls were coming on call-waiting. My manager picked up her phone and was talking to me while her phone was still auto-dialing my number. I asked her if she could take the battery out of her phone to try and troubleshoot. It didn't work. The calls kept coming in. I simply put my phone on silent and let it run its course. I have a full voicemail inbox of blank messages again and about 80 missed calls.

I'm perplexed. I don't know if this is a network issue...if it has anything to do with our area codes not being local....if it is a combo of an android software/hardware glitch in conjunction with something else. Even my friend who's a T-Mobile employee didn't have a clue, and customer support had no insight either.

I don't know if all of the above typing was in vain, but if anyone has insight on how to help or what the problem may be, it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Now that is a new one on me for sure!
Did your g/f's phone act fine after the sim replacement? As in, no issues after that?

I am not familiar with your device, but does your device have a sim also?

Has T-mobile done the same things to your device as they did with your g/f's device?

the only time i had a phone self-dial people (normally those in my contacts list) and otherwise do strange things like this was when my Nokia 6820 (pretty nice for the time) got chewed on by a pet deer. Cingular got a serious laugh out of that one.

sometimes if you work outdoors the sweat or humidity can short out internals causing all sorts of weird errors. my Precedent had a bad Friday full of random restarts due to my pants being soaked in sweat (i'm a mechanic) and grease and it temporarily shorted out the electronics.

Hi owskiii ...

Welcome to Android Forums. After reading your thread... I'm as baffled as your are.
Unfortunately, I don't have an answer or solution for this type problem ... However, you might wanna consider changing numbers if the problem continues.

Hopefully someone else will chime in to better serve you.
Best of luck. :)

if you had downloaded any apps recently it's possible it had malware making it dial people in your contacts list. or if it's a prepaid you could be getting calls from whoever had the number before you did. i had a number once that was always getting called by a medical collections agency every day and night.

Haha, yeah, pretty much everyone thus far has had very confused reactions to this issue. I just got off the phone with customer service again, and the representative had never heard of this problem.

My gf's phone had the sim replaced 2 days ago. Since then, no, there has not been any issues with her line. That being said, since this problem has happened only 2 times to each of us over the course of a month, I am not sure if the sim change resolved the issue or if the problem will reoccur. We're keeping an eye on that for sure.

Yes, my LG L9 does have a sim, too.

I rushed over to T-Mobile this evening while the problem was happening to me, but I was sadly 30 minutes too late. I hate it when I assume stores are all open till 9pm.

If we find that the problem ceases to happen to my gf, then I will simply get a sim replacement and let that be the end of it. However, I would love to find some sort of concrete answer as to why only our two phones seem to be having this going on.

It is weird. Normally I would think that the problem is on the end of the number calling you, since younare just receivers, plus the fact that in the bar night out you can see the other phone auto calling yours.

FYI my 6820 did far more weird stuff besides random dialing. is there any chance your phone got wet somehow? when my Precedent was playing up i had just noticed the screen had sweat inside of it (below the touch layer) and it had been very humid and my pants soaked in sweat.

You may be able clear the issue up by powering down the phone and removing the SIM card. Put it back in and power up.

This issue is reported across many devices and carriers... and one remedy will work sometimes for some and not others, but the SIM card "soft reboot" seems to help most often.

Live battery pulls fixed it in the old days. ;)

My bad if I was unclear in my storytelling. On the bar night the other phone was on the home screen the whole time. I could see that my phone was receiving the call, but their phone wasn't doing anything. I'm beginning to think this has to be a local network issue coupled with the fact that our area codes are based from another state...idk

Not that I know of. There hasn't been any blatant wetness issues like dropping it in the toilet. I do carry it in my pocket all day, and the weather here in the southeast definitely is getting more muggy and humid. It's possible that it could be a factor...but there hasn't been any noticeable screen sweat or other issues that would lead me to think something is shorting or going haywire.

I did this on the bar night (sorry for not including it in the OP). I thought for sure it would remedy the issue since taking the battery out by itself did nothing. Even after reinserting the sim and battery, the calling resumed the second my phone powered on and loaded the home screen.

humidity can cause issues even if there is no noticeable moisture on the device itself. anything from random calls out to the contacts, 'butt dialing/app launching' (somehow spontaneously wakes up, bypasses the lock screen, and moving around in a pocket can cause apps to be launched, etc). my old Merit had that bad habit of butt app launching. i'd pull it out of pocket during work to pause my music to find that my Facebook app opened by itself and has 'jdajgljlejefaojr' typed into the status update field. moisture/humidity seemed to be the primary cause of it. capacitive screens are extremely sensitive to any kind of conductor--including sweat. sometimes it could just be a defective device. the Merit i had randomly rebooted by itself all the time if it was connected to 3G, but in airplane mode was perfectly fine. in the end i replaced it and the new one only reboots itself if it gets the slightest moisture in it

Well... a partial explanation of "live battery pull": a battery pull with the device powered up leaves more of the voltage in the capacitive portions of some of the circuitry, which is different than when we power down with the power button, we're allowing the system to initiate a sort of receding of all voltage away from all areas except those that need to remember what to do the next time the device is turned on.

Following the live battery pull, the capacitive areas of the system, along with their out of parameter voltages, are forced rather than allowed to drain when the new fresh voltages come along once the battery is put back in and the device is turned on.

That can sometimes wash out, at least temporarily, various issues.

I don't recommend it much anymore. There are more reliable remedies for most issues.. SIM card/sd card/battery removal after the thing is turned off. Factory data resets. Data and cache clearing of apps and widgets. Cache partition wipe via recovery menu. :)

FYI my 6820 had far more moisture happen to it, but seemed fine for a week or so after. i'd then get calls from mom and various people in my contacts asking me why i called them and hung up on them. i was outraged as i never did pull prank phone calls, being a mature person. however they kept claiming i dialed and hung up. or they got silence. then i sat my phone on a table at a hangout and then, all on its own, lit up and said 'calling Mom Home'. with a 'WTF?!' look on my face, i instantly tried to hang up before it went through, and the phone froze. i reset it and tried locking the screen with a PIN code. i figured 'there's NO way it can enter a 4-digit PIN and call by itself now!'. wrong. it then said 'keypad unlocked, calling voice mailbox.' trying to end it this time froze again. there were also six emails that were 'stuck' on my inbox, could be opened, but when trying to delete them, gave a 'message does not exist [null]' error. all i know is that Cingular got a huge laugh out of it. mostly due to the origin of the errors and 'haunted' nature it had. they had heard of dogs biting off antennas but not pet deer (rare as it is) nibbling on the fold-out QWERTY keypad. now looking back on it it was pretty funny. the 'haunted' phone has many causes, most of it though deals with moisture damage, even a slight amount.

That is very curious!
Years ago I was out with my daughter and one of her ex boyfriends called her to say he was returning her call. She was baffled as she had not called him at all, and told him so. He told her that there was clearly a missed call from her on his call register.
Upon checking her phone, it showed that her phone had indeed called him while she and I had been out together, and about 5 minutes before he had returned the call.
We have never understood how that happened as the phone was sitting out in the open on my dashboard, and no one was touching it.
I can't even imagine how annoying it would be to have the problem you are experiencing, and wouldn't have a clue to know where to even start to find the problem, with all of the variables involved.:(

2 different type phones.. having the same Unique issue.
even if both phones got wet... if is very unlikely that they will experience the SAME phantom issue.

I think you need to find what the 2 phones have in common.. that might be where a glitch got started.
are they on the same tmobile plan?
and you got the phones at the same time? from the same shop? that issued the sim cards at the same time? maybe a bad sim card batch?

maybe a new sim card.. like your gf.. might fix it .. or reset it.
or
having Tmobile .. reset your account..
