US Dollars instead of Euros as default

I purchased a refurbished Nexus One on ebay. Works great. However, all keyboards have the currency character set to Euros. I am in the US and want to change it to dollars. I can't for the life of me figure out how to change the default location in the phone. Suggestions?

One suggestion would be to move to Europe (just make sure you pick a country that uses EURO as currency - stay away from UK, Switzerland, etc.).

On a more serious note, I've never heard of this before. I use Swype and it has both dollar and euro signs. I would look into locale settings and how to get those changed. (I remember when I was looking for a keyboard that spoke Romanian I found some stuff about the locale, but that was a long time ago.)
