US vs Europe 3G

I have an HTC desire that I bought from Orange in France. It's been debranded now. I brought it to the US on trips and noticed that it only works on Edge there. Is there some update to the radio firmware that would make it compatible with the US 3G networks? Or is it a physical hardware issue?

Physical issue, the US uses different frequencies to Europe for 3G access.

It's a stripped down device that doesn't have the frequencies needed for US 3G.
