Usable as wifi tablet?

A question I have about this phone is whether it is possible to buy one and not use a cell phone contract at all and rather use the device as a wifi-only mini-tablet / PDA / whatever you want to call it. I'm usually near wifi, so I don't want to pay for a data plan and don't mind carrying around my old "dumb phone" too. I'd love an android device for games, note taking, and video playing though. Is this possible?

yes you can connect to wifi and use the phone almost like normal without activating it.
you can get wifi sms apps and wifi talk apps. and almost all other apps will work fine without a activated data service.

I've been doing this for months..(i am including the time i spent with the prevail lol) it would just act like the itouch is to the iphone. I have all the same abilities as if it was activated except im using wifi...it is a great mp3 and movie player. And if you keep airplane mode on you can save a lot of battery while still on wifi.
