Help USB charging

Friends,

I have this Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300.
Mostly I use AC power to charge the phone but at times I have to use my laptop USB port for charging. However this leads to a problem.

By using USB charging, even if I charge it 100%, the batter draining very fast & comes down by approx 30% within 2 hours of time. That too without any heavy load, continuous voice usage and all.
The does not happen when I charge by AC power.

My question is:
--Should I assume that USB charging is not reliable?
--And when it says 100%, it is not actually 100%?
--Is USB charging safe & should be used as preferred method of charging at all?
FYI, i use Battery doctor but does not seem much help.

I've just found that USB charging takes longer but doesn't give any problems but your post is making me think that my phone's sudden drop in battery life is because the charger is not working properly...

Your laptop's USB ports and your wall wort USB charger serve different purposes. They both utilize the same plug/port type and both provide 5v but the amperage is one of the varying factors.
Just guessing you have USB 2.0 on your laptop, that only produces 0.5 an amp. (Newer computers with USB 3.0 are capable of up to 0.9 amp.) The stock Samsung USB charger that came with our phones is a 1.0 amp model. You can buy a 2 amp or more charger from places like Amazon too. The higher the amperage, the faster your phone will charge up. So just keep in mind that not all USB ports are the same.

While this all makes perfect sense and explains why USB charging takes longer it doesn't explain the false battery charge reading the OP mentions.

I understand that. But having said that, it is still not clear that why battery level is going down so fast after USB charge?

Try this - as soon as you finish usb charging, reboot your phone.

It's possible that some process started when it initially saw a computer connection and is running out of bounds even after being unplugged.

If it's that, the reboot ought to fix it.

And then check out GSam Battery Monitor to track down the culprit.
