Help USB Composite Device fail w/ JB

Sigh... it was working and then I managed to "improve" things.

In this case, after doing the OTA JB update, I updated the Motorola drivers for WinXP and now the USB Composite Device fails (hardware install fail and yellow ! for the device according to Device Manager). USB Debugging is turned on, and I tried MTP, etc. Nothing improves things. I tried a couple of older driver sets - no fix there, either. Rebooting WinXP after uninstalling and installing MDM didn't help. The cable and laptop are the same ones that worked about 12 hours ago. The phone has the OTA JB update and the phone is recognized as an XT912.

What am I missing here???

Having written the above and read the word "reboot", it occurred to me the only thing I didn't reboot was the phone. I did that (push the bottom "volume" button and then pushed top button usually used to power down, etc.). This note is being entered via a working USB connection using EasyTether. The big question remains: why did I get the USB Composite Device errors?

Why rebooting the phone fixed the laptop's problem escapes me. But if it ain't broke I ain't gonna fix it.
