Help Usb connection error

Ok so I have the galaxy s3 any time I go to connect it to my cars usb port (which when done should connect to my music) I get a connection error on my car stereo screen then my phone has the little usb symbol up top its says "connected as an installer" if I tap this it goes to settings were I can change it to media or something with camera. When I press media which it should be on for my music to play thru my car stereo it automatically switches back to the "installer" any suggestions? Had the HTC one S before this phone and never had any issues with usb connections

This really will be depended on the car manufacturer radio model. I use cable in my older car without problem. In my X5 I use Bluetooth, which works like charm.
So does my wife's Volvo and BClass.

Would you happen to have Bluetooth enabled car?

Or perhaps headphone jack? With my earlier BMW, I use to connect the phone via jack near the Aux port, using the male-male cable.

Could you share with us what is the model of your radio? Perhaps check with the manufacturer as well?

Edit:
Also, make sure you are running latest firmware of Android.
