Help USB Connections Stops Abruptly

Newbie
So I got my Galaxy Tab 7.7 last week and so far I have nothing but praise for the tablet. It's much easier and lighter to handle than my Acer A500 10" tablet plus the display screen is nothing sort of spectacular.

I did not try connecting the tablet to my desktop PC until yesterday. According to the manual, I can connect it directly without using Kies and so I did. After a while my PC recognize the device (GT-P6800) and I could browse both my brand-new 32 GB micro-SD card and the tablet's internal storage as well. As a test I copied a folder containing 8 music albums in mp3 format to a newly created 'Music' folder on the 32G card.

The copy process started but at the third album, it suddenly stopped and a message appeared on my desktop PC saying that the USB connection was no longer available! A message on the tablet also appeared to effect that the application MTP has stopped unexpectedly and tells me to try again. I still could see the tablet in Windows Explorer on the PC but if I try to access it, the same message appears. It was a weird experience! I removed the USB cable and retried the connection - this time it refused to connect. I then switched off the tablet and switched on again. This time I was successful in connecting the cable although Windows 7 displayed a message saying that the device driver was not successfully installed! I tried copying the rest of the files and again it suddenly disconnected with the same message as before.

Could anyone tell me what's going on? In the meantime, I am going to try to carry out the same process on another PC, failing which, I will try out Kies.
----------

Well, I tried it out on another Windows 7 PC - sad to say, the same thing happened - USB connection between PC and tablet suddenly stops. The only difference is that the tablet hangs at the USB transfer screen (ie, the screen with a picture of a USB plug). I had to power off the tablet to recover back control. I also discovered after this incident that my music files is now listed twice for each song - one can be played without any problem and the other causes a message saying that the file is no longer there to appear! I had to go through each album and delete the 'cannot play' files - luckily I don't have too many music files at this stage. I still have not tried Kies as yet - this will be my next test.

Well it has been several weeks since my last post about the USB connection problem and it's been quite an ordeal trying to make my Galaxy Tab 7.7 to talk nicely to my Windows 7 PC. The only way to describe the result is "terrible". It works intermittently - sometimes the device is recognized instantly by my PC - sometimes it will take some connection/disconnection of the USB cable before it is recognized - why this is so, I have not the faintest idea.

Once connected to the PC, it will recognize both the internal storage card (labelled "tablet") and inserted sd card (if any). The problem lies with trying to copy any files between the PC and the Galaxy Tab 7.7. A message will always pop up saying that the device (Galaxy Tab 7.7) has stopped responding or has been disconnected! This is not true since I could still seen the device on Windows Explorer! So far, I have not been successful in copying a single file from my PC to the Galaxy Tab 7.7.

I don't know what is causing this problem. I just wonder if anybody else is facing the same problem that I have been having. If they have solved this problem please let me know how they did it. Right now I have to copy files indirectly to my Tab - first by copying the files to an microSD card from my PC and then insert the card into my Tab and finally by using a file manager copy the files from the card to my Tab. A roundabout way but it works!

BTW, I tried Samsung Kies and the result is the same - I simply cannot copy any files at all - plus the Kies is s.....l.....o....w!!!!

Please help me if you can. Thanks

I think the connection break problem can be because of any of the three reasons.

1. When you first connected it to your pc, you were in a hurry and started copying and other stuff quickly without giving the pc enough time to recognize new hardware and install proper softwares for it. So, result>improper installation.
My advice>connect to a new port and wait for sometime,i.e., let the pc idle for 10 minutes. Then do your work, when it says your device is installed and ready to use.

2. The usb cable connected is loosely connected from either end, which breaks the connection abruptly. This has been the case with me meany times(loose connection). So, try properly or get a new cable.

3. Your sd card is corrupt or your pc is infected with viruses.!!!
Hope this helps.

Hit thanks if i helped you!

Thanks for the reply but those things you mentioned were checked during the tests I conducted - namely, wait for USB connection to stabilize, check physical connection & cable, and check for corrupt sd card & viruses. All proved to be OK. I am beginning to suspect something amiss with the USB driver - maybe a conflict with another device? I am going to check that next - stay tuned :)

You sure your usb port is ok???

Yes, all of them works fine - they were tested using various devices like, external HDD, USB thumb drives, digital cameras, my handphone, etc. To reiterate, the physical USB ports and cables are fine. I'm still testing the software drivers ....

I finally solved the problem! The culprit was the Acer Iconia A500 Tablet USB driver. Yes, I do have another Android tablet - a larger one (10") that was purchased before the Galaxy Tab 7.7. The Acer requires a USB driver to be installed on the PC before it can talk properly between the devices. For some curious reason this driver was labelled "Acer Iconia 3G Driver Install" on the uninstall program part of Windows 7's control panel. As far as I know, the driver has nothing to do with 3G.

To make a long story short, I removed the Acer driver and bingo! the USB communication between the Galaxy Tab 7.7 and my Windows 7 PC now works flawlessly. I am able to move & manage files between the 2 devices without any problems whatsoever via USB alone.

FYI, I also installed the latest version of Samsung Kies - just to try it out. It now operates faster than before (ie, when I had the Acer driver installed). There were no hangups whatsoever.

So, in conclusion, if you have an Acer Iconia Tab A500, please make sure that you REMOVE (or uninstall) the Acer USB driver before trying to connect the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 via USB or via Kies. It will save you a lot of aggravation and you will live longer (with more hair!) :D
