USB Host Mode on SGS2 Epic 4G Touch

Lurker
Hello, Currently looking for a way to get USB host mode to work on the Epic 4G Touch, as I recently bought a cable off Amazon (Amazon.com: Micro USB Host Mode OTG Cable Flash Drive SD T-Flash Card Adapter FOR Samsung GT-i9100 i9100 Galaxy S II 2 GT-N7000 Galaxy Note: Cell Phones & Accessories)
and have been unsuccessful in my attempts to mount a thumb drive or use a mouse.

I've been through a couple of apps including AL Mass Storage Manager, USB host controller and USB Mass Storage Watcher with no luck.

I did some Googling and have yet to find a solution (according to this link the Epic 4G Touch doesn't have kernel support for it Samsung Epic 4G Touch | xda-developers).

I'm currently rooted running Unamed Rom V 2.01 with Steady Hawkin's Rogue stock kernel.

Any insights to a solution would be greatly appreciated.

It might be helpful to also post why you're trying to do this. I can't figure out why you would. Not saying there isn't a legitimate reason, I just don't see it.

I can see a couple reasons... One very good reason might be so you can take a thumb drive that may have a movie or songs on it, plug it into the phone and play the movie or music directly from the thumb drive without having to transfer it to the phone first. One 64GB thumb drive could potentially hold 10 or more movies. It also would be good for transferring files from a thumb drive to the phone directly.

I've been asking this all over, with no luck. I bought two cables, one for me and one for my son. Me for my artwork, and my son for his college work.

The latest in the saga:
Numerous people have told me to wait for ICS to come out, as USB host mode is built in. Well I now have ICS and so far have been unable to use the adapters. If anyone knows any more about it I would love the intel.

My reason why i would like to be able to do this is because I have trail cameras setup during pre-hunting season and it would be great to plop the sd card into a reader and hook to an otg cable to preview the photos right there.

Any update on this issue? I would love to figure this out.

I downloaded a host mode test app and it shows that the model and software both claim to support host mode, but when it tries to connect it doesn't connect.

I've given up. Just too much time spent searching and trying things, plus I'll probable end up with an expensive phone that is broken because I tried to install some ROM/ROOT/WHATEVER thing.

...Just going to bring my camera into the woods with me, pull the SD card and plop it into the camera to preview what images were taken.

I recently purchased the same OTG cable from Amazon. My phone is not recognizing when i plug in the cable, or a USB device to the cable. I have tried a few of them.

I was introduced to the idea of using an OTG cable from the same utube video in Netcat's post. Of course, I thought I was going to just take the cable out of the packge, plug it in and it would work. Guess I should have done a little homework before ordering...

Like jamesfreddyc I am trying to use my phone to preview images from my trail camera in the field while elk hunting. Most trail cameras dont have displays, so you end up having to carry an extra device to view the photos. I would like use my phone to view the photos stored on the SD card, using a USB Card Reader and the OTG cable. I would also like to view videos and other media files stored on thumbdrives.

My phone is currently running Android Version 4.0.4. My carrier is Sprint.

Is there is an app, update, setting or something I can do to get this working? I should mention I am not qualified to "root" my phone, and even if I was I can't because its a company phone.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be super grateful.

Thanks!

My latest software update came and it's still no go. I have the hdmi adapter and it works, but requires the use of external power. (My old Motorola didn't need external power.) I suspect the same may be true for the jump drive. I plan on buying a couple of cables at the dollar store and seeing if I can jury rig something. I will post my results as to my success or failure.
