Help USB not keeping connection to Windows 7 machine

Isara

I've been fighting this problem for months now, and after looking at every forum and post about similar problems, I figured it was time to ask directly. Basically, my phone and my computer have a very hard time talking to one another. When I plug the USB into the phone, the computer recognizes the phone and I'm (usually) able to navigate the file structures.

However, it appears that it's only temporary, and it (usually) poops out when I try to transfer files, perform a Kies backup, or sync MediaMonkey. It just spins and spins and spins for hours.

I've reinstalled the Samsung USB drivers, removed and rested the battery, tried different cables and ports, and installed extra Windows MTP support. Now, it could be that I have a bad USB port in the phone, but since my computer almost always recognizes the phone before the connection drops, I'm not certain this is the case. Moon Moon (my phone) is a bit of a lemon, but I'm hoping it's not as much of one as it appears.

Has anyone else run into this problem?

Have you tried connecting to a different PC to see if the same thing happens?

You said you had tried different cables. That's good because that was going to be the 1st thing I recommended. The 2nd is to take a folded up dollar bill and use it to clean out your charging port. Make sure your phone is powered off when you clean the port.

I know of several people who have had their USB/charging ports go bad. Hopefully that's not your case but it very well may be.

Good luck.

Since the OP is probably handling the phone, doing the functions he documented, I would guess its the port. For a test, hook the phone up to the pc but don't touch the phone. Just transfer some files from the phone to the PC and vice versa. If it stays connected, its got to be the port.

Thanks for the replies, folks. As it turned out, a friend of mine had a similar problem on his Nexus and found that it can be a Windows 7 problem. Here was the fix:

Plug your phone in.
Find it in the device manager (look for the yellow triangle)
Right click, and choose "Update Driver Software ..."
Choose "Browse my computer for driver software"
Choose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
Scroll down and pick "portable devices", click Next
Choose Standard MTP Device > MTP USB Device
When it warns you that things may go tits up, click yes anyway.

I ended up downloading the driver instead of "pick[ing] from a list of device drivers on my computer," which was the Samsung driver again anyway, but it appears to have done the trick.

Hope this helps other folks who might run into a similar problem.

Glad to hear you got it fixed. I should have offered you the Samsung drivers earlier. I keep them in Dropbox. Here's a link to the drivers in case anyone else needs them.

Great idea. They can be annoying to find on the Samsung website.

Just for clarification, I'd installed the drivers many times while trying to fix the problem, but the problem wasn't solved until Windows did it through the Device Manager. Might be something to do with my own setup (which isn't unusual, but it's Windows - who knows?).
