Root USB not working on Droid at all. can I still root?

ifh

Newbie
Hi, a friend got the new huge Droid X and gave me his old Motorola Droid.

When I plug USB into computer(s), nothing happens. I don't think this is a driver installation issue. Nothing happens on Droid or on computer, no notifications of new hardware detected, nothing. The Droid looks a little banged up, so I think it's a hardware issue. I even wiped it and started fresh.

I have 2.2.2 / FRG83G on Droid.

I tried latest version of z4root but no go.

Can I root without connectivity to PC? I have a microSD to SD adapter, so I can take Droid microSD card out and put files on it.

Thank you,
ifh

edit: I should mention the phone DOES charge when plugged into computer(s) with the USB cable.

When you plug your droid into your computer a notification appears in your status bar on your droid. This notification is what you need to use to connect your Droid to your computer. Does that appear in your status bar?

There are a couple apps that allow you to root without the need for a computer. z4root is one of them, but you have stated that it didn't work. I cannot remember the names of the other ones and tried searching the market, but didn't have much luck. If you search the market, you probably will find them.

Have you tried using a different cable and/or a different computer? There may be some small connectivity issues with the cable or the USB port(s) on your computer. Sometimes, if one connector doesn't properly connect, then it could cause problems.

Let us know...

Sorry to say that all of the known ways to root the Droid 1 are using a computer. The two main ways are RSD and the rageagainstthecage (soup 4 root and super one click) exploit both of which require the ability to connect via usb.

I would definitely consider what Kratos said about making sure you click on the option to mount your phone along with trying a different cable. If you have a charging only cable your will not be able to connect to usb. You need to make sure you have a data cable (4 vs 5 pins from what I am told). Let us know how it works out or not and we can see if we can try something else.

thank you both. I know exactly what you mean about the notification on the Droid. I rooted an Eris quite a while back. No, nothing appears on the Motorola Droid or on the PC.

My last hope is a new cable. I have tried different ports on two separate computers.

Thank you again.

it was the cable!

Rooted successfully in two minutes using "soup or root 2.06" as described at bottom of page here: Rooting the Droid - Home

I only wish I had used the other option so I can have SPRecovery or
Clockworkmod Recovery so I can easily backup and restore. I remembered trying a dozen ROMs on my eris and it was nice to use nandroid backup to backup in case I didn't like the new ROM.

Can I still flash/install SPRecovery or Clockworkmod Recovery?

Thank you guys again!

You can easily flash clockwork recovery. Just download ROM Manager from the market (it's worth paying for the premium version) and when you run it choose the flash clockwork recovery and it will flash it for you that easy.

A point to mention... if you flash clockwork on the driod 1 and then reboot your phone it will reinstall the stock recovery. To get around this you either have to reflash clockwork recovery after every reboot or install a custom rom which will keep the custom recovery.

wow. that was easy! thank you. clockwork recovery on and messing around with Liquid Gingerbread 1.7.

Next thing I gotta re-find is how to disable updates from VZW or something like that. I think I saw that I need to do that in this forum.

Thank you!!

Almost all ROMs (I actually believe that they all do this) already block any OTAs from the carriers. However, if you are not running a custom ROM, here is a link to the guide for blocking OTAs: http://androidforums.com/droid-all-things-root/298424-how-prevent-frg83g-ota-update.html#post2429622.

Also, this has a lot of really good info about everything root, so check it out: http://androidforums.com/droid-all-...t-guide-updated-march-15-2011-9-58pm-cst.html.

Oh and congrats on crossing over to the dark side! I hope you absolutely love it! If you cannot get GB ROMs to run reliably on your Droid (as many people, myself included, cannot), check out this ROM: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...id-concepts-froyo-releases-beta-versions.html. I absolutely love it and this is the only Dev who hasn't abandoned those of us who cannot get GB to run as a daily driver.

Kratos, thank you. I am actually enjoying Gingerbread Liquid 1.7. It is VERY fast with the enabled-by-default overclock. I like its features. The only thing I haven't tried that I use is Google Navigation. Haven't really had problems.

Funny you should mention the Droid Concepts Froyo ROM. I had already tried the latest one, but it was freezing on my Droid. Restored nandroid backup of GB Liquid 1.7 and happy again.

Downloaded an app called Linpack for Android to benchmark processor and got 15.2 MFLOPS on overclocked GB Liquid 1.7. Have you run that app on Droid Concepts Froyo ROM?

Also, which kernel do you run with Droid Concepts Froyo and where can I download it, please? Overclock?

Thank you,
ifh
