USB OTG Confirmed - WOW

Just read the latest posts below, it seems USB_OTG is still unconfirmed 100% but latest official info seems to be saying it doesn't work with external storage devices. :(

Still glad I ordered one though, this wasn't a deal breaker for me, but would've been nice. Have it on the Galaxy S2 but only used it once.

AnandTech have just confirmed that USB_OTG is available on the Nexus 7 Google IO version.:):)

Supporting it in premise and actually working are very different. Still, if Anandtech comes back and says it works with Flash drives like 32 and 64gb flash drives, watch the supply of host adapters dwindle ;)

It would be ironic if it works and Google did not intend it to and they patch it shut with an update.

Has there been a usage update yet to really confirm?

Hope I an proven wrong, but the manual already stated input support of the function and all Anandtech really said was the OS in the N7 supports it. Not that it works and this is what he has to confirm.

My guess is with the smaller battery, only 3.3V is available, so would need a power source for the storage. Perhaps a modded rom like the Gnex......

Bah, hope I am as wrong as can be, but the cloud may be too proud.

As far as I know (in 4.0.4) UBS OTG mode works stock on the Galaxy Nexus.

I will test again on 4.1 (JB stock ROM) tonight to confirm, but on my ICS ROM I plug a 16GB flash drive into my Nexus and I can view files via ES File Explorer and play them like normal.

Input devices ONLY.
If you read the source, it looks likely that storage capability will be achieved with some additional software work. Shouldn't require anything too major. The fact that it works with devices like the USB to ethernet adapter pretty much confirms that the power present should be sufficient for at least flash storage.

I hope ASUS releases the version of this that was at a trade show earlier this year, since has a micro sd and hdmi function.

That would be ideal, but it looks like it's not likely going to happen. I'd easily pay $50 more just to have MicroSD and Mini HDMI (would prefer to not use MHL, but would take it as a compromise).

usb on the go does not support a usb memory stick. so no wow. its really to bad when a company is just this stupid. a simple sd card slot would have sold quite a few of these. look at how much the kindle fire is worth on ebay. in 6 months or less this will be worth about the same. i would definitely buy one for $100 thats what its worth with only 8gb's of storage.

Sounds like someone needs to get their story straight (Gizmodo review):
For a something designed for HD media and high-performance games, you can fill that up real, real quick (though you'll be able to play media off a drive connected via micro USB).
I think I'll trust Anandtech, but it is frustrating to see conflicting info.

They also claim that there are some other features which may be available in the final JB release. For all we know, USB OTG storage support is one of them.

The important thing is, the hardware is capable, and the software is also capable with some tweaking, which should be easy considering this is an unlocked Nexus device.
