USB OTG Y cable for charging?

Is there a recommended Y cable to use for USB OTG charging with my N7 2012?

I just got my USB OTG cable, still pretty new to this USB OTG thing.

I've been looking around on eBay/Amazon and not sure which to stick with here before I dive into making the purchase.

An OTG cable is a cable with pins 4 and 5 on the phone end shorted. That's all there is. And no company's shorting wire is "better" than another company's shorting wire (it's about 1/2" of bare wire). Any $5 OTG charging cable on Amazon is okay.

You will find that the nexus does not charge when in USB host mode unless you are running a custom ROM or kernel that specifically address it. In theory it will power the USB device and not the nexus.

I have had some issues with various powered OTG cables in the past, some would crash and hard reset my N7 when power was connected, some would cause the n7 to not reconize any USB device until power was removed from the connector but once mounted plugging in power would safely power the USB device only.

I have a generic no name powered OTG cable I only use when mounting my WesternDigital Passport drive as it has no external power connector, it draws all its power from the USB host and the powered cable greatly extends the runtime of the tablet as it powers the drive only.

For regular USB devices like thumb drives I use a generic otg cable without a power connector for simplicity.

Hi Woohooguy.. I have a Xiaomi Mi3. same issue. phone doesn't charge while connected to OTG device. the split OTG cable powers the external device like HDD and Pendrives, but not the phone. You have mentioned that some rooting operation can enable this. could you please let me know what exactly needs to be done here.
Thanks in advance.

I am also looking for an option to charge the Nexus 7 while an OTG cable is plugged in for an external specialized camera.

Are you aware of any working solution?

Thanks

There is always a solution. Usually small tablets have only one micro-usb either for charging or external device, but not both at the same time in host-mode. On some tablets/phones it is id resistor enough but rarely. You can also recompile custom kernel and “force current”, or open such device and modify board for external (another) charger plug, on most tablet boards there is just one zero ohm resistor to be removed and separate vusb and charger path and then add (solder) plug to charger-path which is adapter power to Power Management Unit on board.
