USB Tethering help

nc53

Lurker
I have a motorola droid and I pay for a data plan, but not for a tethering plan. I use the usb tethering to give my laptop an internet connection which usually works perfectly when I am on sites such as this one, but when I want to go to for example, nbc.com, netflix, or hulu and watch videos, it redirects me to the following page, https://dunsp.vzw.com/newSelfProvisioning/SelfProvisioning . My understanding is that the usb teethering aspects of my phone are free, and that I have to pay for the wireless hotspot, so I am wondering why it is not playing the videos and redirecting me to this website.

I am not sure what device you have but your not actually supposed to tether without the hotspot plan addition. It sound like Verizon is blocking the heavy data usage sites that do video streaming to your phone. If you want a work-around then you can download either EasyTether or PDANet from the market and they will allow unrestricted (wired) tethering. The are free initially and then after a trial period will require you to buy them for a one time fee to access https sites.

Understand though that since tethering is a violation of your Terms of Service (TOS), ie: contract, Verizon could technically charge you a fee or something though I have never heard of anyone getting in trouble for it. Hope this helps.

Also, you can always give rooting a try since then you don't have to pay for PDAnet or other services since you'll be able to install Wireless Tether or other apps that require a rooted phone.

May be an old thread, but to answer OPs question, it's blocking anything with https.

Try it. Google.com works. https:// google.com forwards you to their provisioning page.

I've been looking for others that have this problem but it seems that nobody has ever figured out that it only messes with https traffic. Weird.

Because the free version of PDANet only does HTTP traffic, not HTTPS :)

Root and get Wifi-Tether for Root Users. Acts just like a hot spot. That said, I don't think you can access Netflix or Hulu on Android yet. If I'm wrong, I would like to know how you can.
