Usb tethering problem

Hi,
I have just installed HTC sync onto my laptop to connect my HTC Desire S.
It connects OK for synchronisation, and to use as a disk-drive and is also shown as connected in HTC sync, however, when I select the phone option 'USB Tethering' so I can use my phone to connect my laptop to the internet, HTC sync says 'No device connected'? so I can't use it as a tether. Anyone any ideas?
Thanks

it has been a very long time.. since i delt with that... i use wifi tethering now.

but I think you have to:
homescreen
menu
settings
applications
development

then make sure that "usb debugging" is checked..

try that.

Many thanks for prompt reply. Tried what you suggested and made sure USB debugging was ticked, but again, when I selected the 'USB tether' option, after connection, HTC sense said 'No device connected'!

some carriers block that function ... on the phone. they physically remove the functionality from your user rights (sofware on the phone).

but I thought they also remove he "option" from your list as well.

if the carrier took that function away.. you will have to:
1. download an app to get that done... from the android market..
2. root your phone.. is get that function back... with a new ROM or better app.

note: research these 2 options.

Thanks, that would make sense. Maybe I'll look into getting an app, but don't really want to get into rooting the phone
