USB Tethering Widget that works

Alpha78

Lurker
As a previous user of HTC Desire, the pop-up selection screen when USB is detected, gives great convenience of selecting the tethering function.

As a new S3 user, I find the phone by default goes to removable media mode. Tethering option is hidden deep within the settings menu. I tried to download this "Tethering Widget" which works for Wifi tethering but not USB. It could turn off a USB tether, but not turn it on.

Has anyone managed to download a free widget that switches the phone to tethering mode in one tap? Appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks.

1) Find the empty space on screen where you would like to place widget.
2) Tap and hold that space
3) Tap 'Add to Home Screen'
4) Tap 'Apps'
5) Scroll to the settings widget
6) Press and hold it. Without letting go, move it to the area on the screen you want it to reside
7) Let go, then scroll down to 'Tethering and portable hotspot'. Tap that.

Sorted!!

Seems like quite a few user reviews of USB tether widgets on Google Play mentioned that it doesn't work on ICS phones.

Patiently waiting for a widget that works. Seriously the steps to turn on USB tethering sucks, worse than my old HTC Desire running Froyo.

I'm currently using PDANet on my Dinc, was hoping it would work on the s3, no? I know it needs root, but once root is available, it should work, right?

Guys, READ my post! You don't need to download anything-it's native with the handset and it works!! Unless your handsets are different somehow in which case I apologies in advance :-)

Yes, USB tethering is native with the handset, but it's troublesome to tap on Settings, select Tethering and Hotspot, then tap the checkbox to enable USB tether.

What is preferred is a widget that can be placed on screen, tap to enable USB tethering, tap again to disable. Seems like current widgets in the Market doesn't work on ICS phones for USB tethering.

Seriously, how lazy are you lot?

Like the man said,

Long press empty screen,
Press Shortcuts
Press Settings
Press Tethering & portable hotpot

Job done, all but 2 taps to turn it on!

I don't have my gs3 yet, but when I had CM9 ICS on my DX the only tethering app that worked for me was "wifi tether" from the Play store. I tried Foxfi and easytether but those did not work.

Just to clarify, are you talking about putting a shortcut to 'settings' or a shortcut to the Tethering item beneath settings onto the main screen?

hey guys, i'm new here i wish i can find the answer from u. previously i was having HTC DesireZ, and the pop-up selection screen when USB is detected, gives the great tethering function that uses the PC internet as a connection to the phone. now i'm using S3 and noticed that the tethering function is working the other way, using the phone connection as the internet to the PC. is there any way to get the function of the HTC on S3 (without rooting)???
many thanx :)

Hey guys.
I found,that all USB tethering widgets works,BUT...
It has to be enabled after connecting of the cable via settings 1st time, afterwards it works.
I prefer SwitchPro widget, because of vertical layout. In this case the WiFi signalization doesn't work,it only enables wifi hotspot,no feedback from the system(for illuminate the control),therefore it doesn't disable it.
USB tethering is working, when 1st time you connect via settings.

Read and followed steps from bigstu22. Tethering shortcut is not on the list. could that option be one that was added along with network bloatware? unlikely but...
The HTC desire widget was perfect - 1 touch on or off.
come on Samsung its not that difficult!

I went through this entire thread several times, and although your post is on the right track, it did NOT work for my Samsung Galaxy S3 as some of the menu options are different. By using your instructions, I WAS finally able to figure it out though, as follows:
(I will just color green the parts I needed to change for it to work for me, red are former instructions that did not apply)

1) Find the empty space on screen where you would like to place widget.
2) Tap and hold that space
3) Tap 'Add to Home Screen' "Apps and widgets"
4) Tap 'Apps' "Widgets"
5) Scroll to the settings widget
6) Press and hold it. Without letting go, move it to the area on the screen you want it to reside
7) Let go, then scroll down to 'Tethering and portable hotspot'. Tap that.

Tapping APPS instead of WIDGETS in step 4 made it impossible to work as you said - as only the Settings icon would move to the screen with NO settings OPTIONS screen.

Thanks for getting me on the right path, though, after a little frustration.

Hope it helps someone!:)

Did not work, after many frustrated attempts, only the Settings icon moved to the screen, no other options. I posted the correct solution for my phone, perhaps a later update?
[EDIT} Btw, there is no option "Shortcuts"[/EDIT]

Haven't read everthing here but Foxfi works on my Straight Talk S3 (SCH S960L Dual core 1.51 ghz Snapdragon/2GB RAM/Adreno 225 version).

USB tethering works flawlessly but the wifi hotspot won't for me. I am not rooted, all is stock, Android 4.1.2.
