Help Use my own notification sound?

I've got a couple of old MP3s that I imported from my old phone to my new Desire HD and I want to use one as my SMS notification tone. The tones are stored in Music, and they're available for selection as ringtones but not notification tones.

I've looked and looked round here and I just can't work out how to do it. I've tried the Handcent app recommended on another thread, and that didn't work even though I could actually select the MP3 as the notification. I've tried adding a folder sdcard/media/audio/notifications (mentioned in the same thread) and put the MP3 in it, which apparently should make it available as a notification tone, but no joy.

Any more ideas? I am getting a headache from all this!!

Hi,

looks a little stupid to thank for You asking a question, but really, You helped solving my topic. In the question You wrote about trying to create a certain directory on your sdcard to put notifications in. My topic was the same, to get additional notifications from my old WM6.5 phone into Android.
I created the directory and placed the files in there, it did work for me, no reset needed, they just showed up in the notification list for me to choose from. I have no idea why it did not work for You, really sorry, but it worked for me. (stockrom, 2.2.1, no root)

regards,
Ruud

Hi, i downloaded astro file manager(market-free) and created a file called notifications.
You can then drag and drop or copy(whatever your method is) the mp3 you want as a notification and then it should show up in your notification list.

Hope it works!!

Am also unable to get a personal sound into the notification list. Have tried the above method of "Media - Audio - Notifications" folders on the SD card but no success. There were no problems adding a personal ringtone and an alarm tone but cannot get a notification tone of my choice to show up! Am I right in trying to use an MP3 snippet as a tone, or does it have to be in a specific format?

Being a bit deaf and the Desire being annoyingly quiet, even on full volume, I need sounds of a certain type - loud!

Gags 111 suggested "astro file manager" but I don't want to resort to installing apps just to get a tone to show up but when I reach screaming point then it will happen!.

Hmmm. I've got my own notification tones but can't for the life of me remember where I put them or how I chose them. I'll get back later when I have my phone with me. Though, being Friday night, I may not .... :D

I moved a whole "notifications" folder to the sd card/media/audio/notifications, and they weren't available. but then i moved each sound file to the folder by itself, and it worked. don't know if that applies to you or not. hope it helps. :)

Download the Ringdroid app from the android market. It gives you the option to select your own mp3 tracks and set them to ringtones or notifications. You just need to select "notification" when you save it from the list. It is then added to your list of notification sounds :]

How do you do this without downloading Ringdroid? I made a folder on my CD card Media/audio/notifications and put one in it and it doesnt show up when I go to change the notification sound.
