Use PC screen to see what mobile cam is recording?

Yankleber

Newbie
Hi there,

My device is a Samsung Galaxy J2 Prime powered by Marshmallow OS.

I often use it to make videos with myself playing electric guitar. I normally use the front camera to monitor how the record is going through the mobile screen but the quality really sucks. Now I would like to start using the rear camera (that has a too much sharper image) but in this case I won't have the screen to know if I am not going out of framing, etc.

So I was thinking if there is some kind of app that allows me to connect the mobile to my PC through USB or WiFi in a way that I can see in the computer screen what the mobile camera is recording. Any clue?

PS: My mobile is NOT rooted.

As an alternative suggestion, try out AirDroid, a remote access app. Along with being a handy wireless file transfer utility it also includes features like remotely controlling your phone's camera:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sand.airdroid&hl=en_US
I prefer WiFi connectivity as eliminates a lot of the USB variables -- no operating system based MTP/PTP/mass storage issues or driver installs based on OS version or admin privileges (if you're connecting to a computer that's not yours), cable type and reliability issues, etc. You will need to have your phone and your PC connected to the same local network though, so there is that. But all you need is the AirDroid app installed on your phone and then you just connect to it from a computer via a web browser interface so nothing needs to be installed on the computer. (... it doesn't matter if you're running Linux, Mac, or Windows, or which browser you prefer.)
One caveat to AirDroid is it really, really pushes a user to sign up for an AirDroid account and rely on their online storage services. This does allow you to do things like transfer files remotely when you're elsewhere (i.e. at work, etc.) but the app works just as well when you're just connecting locally solely over your own home network. I've been using AirDroid for years now and have never signed up for an account, preferring to just rely on local home networks as opposed to connecting through the Internet.
Anyway, start the app on your phone, and you'll see an 'AirDroid Web' listing. On the right-hand to that, tap on the grey circle with an 'i' and another window will pop up, if you see any reference to 'web.airdroid.com' ignore it as that's the link to the online account. Instead, under that will be another link, a numerical IP address with a colon and a port number -- so it will show as something like http://10.0.0.5:8888 or http://192.168.0.5:8888. (That IP address is just based on how you have your home network set up, and the port number is just the default port the AirDroid app is using.) Now set your phone down and on your computer in a browser tab type in that IP address and port number, hit the Enter key, and in the browser window you'll see a modified interpretation of your phone, something like this:

In the left-hand side, click on the 'Camera' icon and then a box will show up showing whatever your phone's camera will be pointing at. Below is just a shot of my camera lying on a chair pointed up a ceiling fan:

At the bottom you'll see there are the typical controls to toggle between your phone's front or back cameras, camera or video, etc. And since you're connecting via WiFi you can position your phone nearby, or if you'd rather have a wider perspective and have your phone positioned across the room you don't need to buy an extra long USB cable.

Are you sure you aren't just trying to promote that app???

'cause you didn't have to do all of that just to get attention for your app..

Well yeah, because a lot of people continue to spread misinformation about a lot of apps so unless someone actually explains the details as to why, the misinformation just continues to be accepted as a reality. In the case of AirDroid, any number of postings even here in this forum are incorrect or misleading. Plus, it's easy to tell someone to just use some app, no matter if it suits their needs or not. At least by providing some details, that allows whomever is asking a question might have a better chance at finding a solution that does work for them.
Basically, if you feel that's just too much reading, don't bother reading it.

Hi @kate

I am definitively not the developer and I have nothing to do with them! Actually I didn't even was aware of their existence till then - LoL.

But I fully understand that it may looked like that I was "promoting" something and I admit that it was entirely my fault because the way I did things: a new member starts a thread and less than a half hour later he returns himself with a "solution" mentioning a certain product. Quite weird!

But I will explain what happened... the case is that I am a VERY anxious person and this is not the first time (actually it's far from this!) that I start a thread in a forum asking for help and due to not stop to look for the solution myself I end finding what I was after a bit later. Dang!

:p

Happens that this is not all... I am also a person that likes to share with other people everything I consider good. I think it's my teacher veil. Anyway, every time I find a solution myself I consider fair to go back there where I asked for help and tell them about the good stuff. After all I kind of occupied the mind of those people to solve a problem of mine, so what would be fairer than let them know that I found the answer? I like to think about others that may have the very same issue I have and remember of the several times I searched for something in Internet and could find a question and an answer – some times from years ago – just because someone was kind enough to share it.

That's what happened. But this time I failed miserably on do my part and the only thing I managed was to upset @Xavier Black... again I sincerely apologize for any misunderstanding that my action may have caused.

Even so I would like to let you know that it seems to be a good place and I should return several times always when I have a question about Android world.

:)
