Help Use this phone as 3g connection for Tablet

I have the Galaxy S plus and a new Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. Is it possible for my tablet to use the phones 3g data connection? I have figured out how to 'tether' but when the wifi is turned on (on the phone) the 3g connection is disabled? Is this possible or is the only route to buy a sim for the tablet?
