Help use wifi on un-activated phone?

Just bought a Samsung galaxy centura ST phone from walmart, but don't plan on activating it for a month until my old phone's balance is used up. I would like to start using the apps at home using wifi but nothing works. For example Maps says 'Newtowk failure This application requires a working data connection.' Chrome says 'unable to connect to the internet' or 'this webpage is not available.'

I connected to my secure home wifi, it says connected. The wifi symbol on the right side of the status bar, next to the cell bars and battery indicator, is grey and has two tiny arrows pointing up and down that blink intermittently.

I should be able to use my wifi, shouldn't I?

Yes you should be able to use WiFi. I just received the Samsung Galaxy Centura which is now a Tracfone option. I have not yet activated it on the network, but everything works fine off my WiFi...email, apps store, games, controls etc.

All I can think of is the obvious which is to make sure WiFi is turned on in your settings. The fact that the icon is showing would indicate it is on. The only other thing to check would be to verify the pass phrase if it is a secured system.

Sometimes older wireless routers need to be cycled on and off to properly sync to a new device, this many times works wonders for a non-responsive device.

In the meantime, I'm surprised that your minutes won't transfer to the new phone. I just moved to the Centura and transferred my minutes without issue. It took about 2 hrs, but the process worked.

Like mentioned, you can go ahead and transfer your number to your new phone and not lose your minutes, text, and data that you have left.
