Using a Galaxy Note purely as a tablet.

Hello there.

I've currently got an iPad2 which is largely used around the house by the wife, and by me when I want to watch football at work via Sky Go over 3G. I love the look of the Galaxy Note (released Nov 3rd here in the UK?) and I wondered, if it's presumably unlocked would anything stop me using the same UK 3 microsim from the iPad in the Galaxy Note (with a caddy if the Note is full size sim) purely for 3G data? Not interested in the Note as a phone, my works BlackBerry performs that role, but I love the idea of the small tablet capabilities of the Note.

Plus, that ppi and form factor will be pretty awesome for ebook reading, and take over from my old Sony prs505 (I rarely read outside anyway, as much as I like e-ink).

Cheers!!

This is an old post, but I'm reviving it because I'm thinking about the same thing... I'm currently on overseas military deployment, and seriously considering ordering an unlocked int'l Galaxy Note to use mostly as a mini-Tablet. The one feature that really caught my interest is the S-PEN, something I would use A LOT. I know there's been mixed reviews on it, but I think it has what I need, esp. taking a lot of notes. And being here in Afghanistan, I can get a GSM card, and even use the data service, although it will obviously be pretty primitive (they actually have 2G service out here). Cheapest one I could find is $544, delivered to APO address, unlocked. Think this will be a good deal?

Jcal, thank you for your service first of all.
I believe the Note uses a micro SIM and you should have no problems using a GSM carrier there.
It's a great phone and tablet. Friend of mine has one and I love it. That price looks solid, not sure if you'd get a better deal elsewhere.

Thanks... one more thing. Internet here is crap, what little exists, and no WiFi to speak of. I was able to download the Samsung Kies file, took 3 hours, and installed on my personal laptop which is not online.
** Can I get the ICS (4.0?) update and install on the Galaxy Note through this method?

Assuming the firmware is available in your current location there should be no problem upgrading to ICS! If memory serves from GB to ICS the file was 300mb+! On a 2g connection that is going to take forever! Maybe the providier your purchasing from could install the latest firmware for you! Hope this helps and good luck in Afghanistan, most respect

Galaxy note is one of the best smartphones that is invented. Its on the borderline of a tablet and a smartphone. One of the best phones available in the market.

Wanted to share this... my N7000 Galaxy Note finally arrived to my outpost!! set it up with Samsung Kies, and now it's upgraded to ICS 4.0.3! Found a nice steady internet connection thru a confidential State dept. contact. Also installed the Chrome browser.
Love it already... one great plus I wasn't expecting was that this thing can play just about every video file I throw in it, from avi to mp4, mkv, etc.! and plays em all like a champ with the stock video player!
Also put in a GSM SIM from MTN, south african based provider, and able to make/receive calls... now need to do research to set up APN to get data service on it. That's my next step.

Wanted to share this since I'm now back home in the States... As of now, I'm just using my Galaxy Note N7000 purely as a tablet, and not signed up with any service providers. Since being home, in California, I still can't access a lot of Apps and movies/TV shows, keep getting notices that "This Item is NOT available in your country".. Even stuff like Hulu Plus, Tapatalk, etc. I'm assuming the device still thinks it's still in Afghanistan? Is there a way I can fix this, so I can get the updates/Apps in the United States??
