Using a non @gmail.com google account on Droid

I have a droid x2 and just got the asus prime. I can use my non @gmail.com account as my primary google account on my prime, however on my 2 it won't accept it. Does it HAVE to be @gmail.com. I don't want answers saying it is easy to create a gmail.com email that is not what i am asking. That is the only answer I have found in similar threads.

Thanks for any input.

I understand the frustration, but not have have the answer. It seems that using a non-gmail google account is one of those things I've seen reported to work, not work, work, not work, over the years.

It may not work in 2.3, I've seen claims to that effect, but I wouldn't guarantee it.

I wonder if it would help to try to push it from the other direction? Can you go to the web Market, and then follow the steps under your account settings there to ensure that the DX2's number is known? If it doesn't show up, try to have Google send you an SMS by logging into your account and chosing password recovery options -

https://www.google.com/settings/general

Then try to enter your google account in to the Market on your phone, as you've tried.

Unless someone knows specifically, that's the best I got, sorry.

Im a total android noob. Sorry - I am not even sure what the standard icons on the bottom of the screen are called. Still I did not have any trouble setting up an email account in 2.3
I used the standard email feature.

Click the email Icon

Click the bars icon at the bottom of the screen

Click Accounts

click the bar icons again and click "add account"

Click the envelope icon that says "others" - add your email information and password.

Voila.

You can also set the phone to bring in more than one email account. I am currently using gmail but I have also had my earthlink accounts added too. I chose not to do it again because it just got to be a big pain.

After you set up your email account you can choose to make this your default (it might be on the same screen as when you set up the account). And, if I remember right you can choose to not set either account as a default. When you click on email you are simply given a list of your email accounts to check.

I sure hope that answers your question...if not Ive got egg on my face :P

As far as I know, you must have a Gmail account. My Hotmail account was linked to my Google account but I still could not use it for my phone. I've never heard of anyone finding a way around this either. Be glad that Google only forces you to use Gmail and not something like iTunes. I share your frustration as I have no use for the Gmail account, but it's something we have to deal with.

No, you can use a non "@Gmail.com" account, however, it must be hosted in Google Apps for it to work. So while the @whatever will work, it still has to be hosted on google's servers. I have several of my e-mail addresses from various websites linked to my gmail app on my Google devices.

How do you link your account to Google Apps?
