Using an old Droid to access wifi

As I've retired and now on a fixed income, I'm planning to go from smart to dumb and get a basic phone and plan for only voice and text. However, that will leave me with a droid that is disconnected from Verizon. Can I basically then use the phone as a small wi-fi tablet and access the internet and email, not to mention other app?

Hey Sulpher, that's good news, and as fast a response as I'll get on Ubuntu forums.

I'm familiar with linux, but haven't mucked around with rooting the Droid, though I may just for the fun of it now.

Is there anything in particular I'd need to do or change to use the data features over wifi?

Thanks for the quick response...

I am in the same boat as you, retired and bored. I have an old Droid2 that I use to surf the web and Stream music to the phone from the computer using the DLNA app. Works just fine. I have always had mine rooted and from time to time I hook it to the computer and use the SDK and ADB to mess around with the files. If I mess up anything, I can always SBF back to stock and start over. Better to tinker with the D2 than the Droid Charge which is the replacement for the D2.

Enjoy your freedom!

Thanks for the response. What I want to do is use the phone's wifi at a public location (as well as home). What's I'm trying to figure out is if the phone is disabled after Verizon pulls the plug or if wifi still works with voice disabled.

Sulphur said, "yes" but with no explanation. Hopefully, he means the phone will operate as it does now with the exception that wireless (3g) is down.

That is what I mean. mine too is disconnected from Verizon 3g but I a able to use it to surf web with my home WIFI. Surf Web or is DLNA app to comes with my home computer or other phone. only thing ua can not do is make phone calls. But U can get the app Free Sms and U can send and receive text messages thru urn WIFI. also keep urn apps up to date thru Market or get new ones.

Actually, free sms app has a pay thing that lets U make phone calls over urn WIFI.
