Using contact and calendar on tablet

Can't I use the calendar as a friggin calendar and contacts as I want without google's friggin omnipresence?!
This is a real nightmare. I bring up the calendar on my tablet and google wants to control EVERYTHING. Neither contacts nor the calendar willfunction at all - even after I signed up with big brother...I mean google, and jumped through their friggin myriad hoops. This is just crazy.

What device do you have? Samsung phones can operate calendar, contacts, even download apps from Samsung App Store without a Google Account on the phone. I'd believe even HTC and other manufacturers have that capability. Unless you bought a Nexus, but the Nexus is a pure Google phone, so that's obviously a part of it. If you did not want Google on your calendar or a phone to function without Google, never buy a Nexus.
