Help Using GPS without using data

Sophster

Lurker
Hi Android users,

I have a Galaxy S1 and I need to use the GPS in North America! I realised that using google maps would use data which would end up with a massive bill!

Is there an app where I can buy a map of North America and then use it on my phone as a GPS, that is offline?
If I then have a map, I assume I won't be charge for data usage as long as data roaming is disabled in my settings. Is this correct or would there be anything else that needs to be disactivated?

Many thanks for the help!!

It is now possible to download Offline Maps for Google Maps in Android. What you need to do is update to the latest version of google maps.

Once that is done open the application, go to labs and and activate the tool to be able to download offline maps. Switch to places tab, then search for the place and select it. Once that is done you would get the option to download map data. The application download map data for the radius of 10 mile from the selected place.
