Using HTC Sensation abroad?

I'm to France later this month (currently in the UK) and have a couple of questions about using the phone abroad.

(1) If I use the Maps app to use as satnav in France, will I incur charges?
(2) How do I keep my phone on for KiK messenger and weather app without incuring charges?


Finally, the Maps app that came with the phone (i think its Google)... where can I find instructions to use it and what some of the screen symbols mean?

I'd not use Google Maps/Navigation in France because of the data roaming costs when I'll need a proper car navigation.
E.g. for Britanny there aren't offline maps.
Smaller streets in Paris aren't named on the offline maps ... and so one

When I'm in France, I use the Navigon app for car navigation. The app navigates with offline maps in the phone storage/SD card and doesn't need a data conection.

For messenger and weather you might use a free WiFi hot spot in a hotel.
