Root Using Linux to Connect

I need some help connecting to Linux laptop. Does anyone have experience in this area? I don't know a lot about the Linux OS but I can get around. I'm having a problem connecting to this phone through USB on Windows 8. So this is my other option. Currently I am running AV Linux. I am still trying to figure out how to get the computer to recognize the phone. Does anyone one know where to get USB drivers? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Are you trying to use ADB or just transfer files?

Phil is right about setting up your rules if you are planning on using linux, that is what is used in linux to detect your device with usb

Can you get MTP to work?

I'm running ubuntu studio and MTP works in gnome and xfce...

I use Linux Mint 17 and the phone connected fine in MTP mode.
