Help Using my EVO without a sprint account attached

Hi gang. I kept my EVO when I upgraded to a Photon last year. I'd like to now use it as a media player for my younger son. I am way behind in updates, don't even have the new play store. The selects for firmware updates in settings are greyed out. Guessing because it is not associated with Sprint any longer. How do I get up to date without putting in a lot of effort? Don't really want to root (seems to much involvement). I am actually considering adding a line so it will be registered. Thoughts for the pros?

Thanks in advance.

the only reaons you need the phone active on sprint is to:

1. play sprint TV
2. use sprint zone
3. make phone calls over the sprint (and its roam partners) network
4. send/receive mms and SMS message over sprint network
5. get OTA firmware and HTC updates from sprints network.

with #5, you can find online the updates in .apk format. then all you would do is download the apk to the root folder of your SD card, unzip then run it and it will install.

after that, you can use wifi to get online and make voip calls, search the WWW and play music...

I use Groove IP with Google voice and make free calls over WiFi. Use your WiFi to update your market to Google play and add apps as you need
