Using My S3 as a hard Drive

It depends on what IP addresses your work router will recognize. Hopefully the address you assigned your laptop won't conflict with another device on your work network. The ranges are pretty common so you may be fine. If not, you will need to switch back to "Obtain the settings automatically". Then when you get home, you would need to enter the set of three numbers again. But that is the price you may have to pay for using FoldeSync at home.

My router, which is supplied by my ISP, lets me set an IP address for my laptop as "fixed" so the router saves that IP address for my Laptop using my laptops adapter's MAC address.

I don't think your Linksys has this feature, but maybe you can find a router that does.

I checked the manual for your Linksys E3200 router, unfortunately, the manual is for the whole "E series" of routers so yours may or may not be capable of this, but it does say that you can assign a "fixed" IP address for any client on your DHCP server. Here are the directions:

DHCP reservation allows you to assign a unique, fixed IP
address to a specific device on your network

To configure DHCP reservation:
Setup > Basic Setup > DHCP Reservation

1. Log into the browser-based utility (see

Set the router to reserve the ip address as above but leave the laptop as DHCP so it will work on other networks. Whenever you reconnect at home or the ip lease renews, you will still pick up the reserved address.

Also, folder sync doesn't have to use ip. I just use that as I do use static. You can use the computer name. The routers dns function will address that to whatever ip address that device has

I agree that the solution of fixing the IP is not good and will really not work for me since I need to be able to take my PC places.

If you can tell me how to reserve the IP address on the router (instructions above only talked about on PC) it will be appreciated. Also, if I do not use the IP in the app setup where how do I use the computer name - Do I just replace the the IP with computer name?

Also, if it makes any difference I do have my own domain but I do not want to use any cloud for even temporary storage.

Thanks in advance

The step by step instructions I posted above are from your Router's user manual and are settings in the router to "fix" or reserve an IP address for a certain PC or device. Like SU said, change the network adapter back to DHCP (automatic IP addressing) and set your router to always assign the laptop the same IP address.

Musky - Thank you so much. I did not see your step by step instructions and thought that SUroot was referring to the prior instructions about setting IP on my PC. I followed your instaructions for my router and they worked great. I am now all set to use Foldersync. I appreciate that you went out of your way and looked up the specific instruction for my router.

Again thanks for all the help.

Your welcome, glad it worked out for you. I should have thought about the "fixed" IP address settings in the router in the first place. I was thinking "old school" methods. :)

I still use that method + router on my computers as they tend not to leave the house

It looks like I spoke a little too early. I reserved an IP for my PC and my wife's PC 192.168.1.148 & 149 and I have checked to make sure that IP addresses are properly assigned by doing a IPCONFIG and also my Norton Internet Security shows the correct IPs.

Foldersync for my wife is working fine but the foldersync does not work properly for my PC. I have tried the "Validate login" for my PC and it fails. The only thing I changed for my account was changed the IP and I have tripled checked the IP and then reentered the login and password but still fail the validate.

Any suggestions?

Not sure if this is it, but I have tried to make changes to an "account" in FolderSync and the main settings (address, and login) don't seem to change permanently. I have had to delete the account and start over with a new one to get these "major" changes to take affect.

Like I said, might not be the problem but it wouldn't hurt to set up a new account and see.

Okay, I finally figured out the problem and would appreciate your help if possible. I have Norton Internet Security installed and if I disable the firewall I can validate the login so that is obviously the problem (don't know why this was not a problem when I did not reserve the IP).

So if you know how I can tell my firewall to allow the FolderSync app or to allow my phone (which is on the same network ) I would appreciate your advice

I really don't understand it but I "reset" the firewall in NIS and now Foldersync is working on my PC. So I think I am okay but I wanted to make sure that both of you, Musky & SUroot, realize that I appreciate all of your efforts to help me.

Thanks
