Using pay as you go Android smartphone

Hi,

I am going to buy an android smartphone without any monthly contract (pay as you go). I have not owned one before.

I am quite happy to download and use apps / internet using the wifi connection in our house but I do not want to incur telephone charges for connecting to the internet when I am outside our house. Many apps will try to stay connected to the internet when I go out. Can I stop the smartphone from automatically connecting to the internet when I am out and about?

I hope that makes sense!

Kind regards,

John

PS Not sure whether to go for a Samsung Galaxy Ace or HTC Wildfire S - any thoughts are welcome.

Hello and welcome to Android Forums. :D

Yes you can. Turing on Airplane mode will disable all wireless connections, but you will not be able to receive calls. You can also disable 3G so it's not constantly looking for a network. There's also data monitoring apps if you're interested.

I have an Avail pay as you...data package only cost me $5 a month for 50 megs with AT&T. I started out with 500mb for $25 deal and the unused mb roll over each month. I have had it for about 6 months now and still have over 400mb of data. However I do turn off every thing unless I need it, 3G, wifi, blue tooth, and gps using free app called "Powerful Control" every thing is in one bar on your home screen or any adjacent screen.
