Using SD cards with android devices?

I need to get a tablet, and I want one with an SD card slot, so I started investigating android devices. I've never used android, so there's a lot I don't understand.

I've been reading all this stuff about difficulties using SD cards with KitKat (android 4.4), but a lot of what I read isn't really clear or maybe it's too technical for me.

Simple questions: if I get an android tablet and pop an SD card into it, will I have problems reading and writing files to the SD card

Their should be no issue using sd cards. Different tablets do have different external memory sizes which you would need to look out. Also you need to make sure you have a decent memory card, their are a lot cheap sd cards going around the fail prematurely or do not have the correct storage space.

As of right now devices running Android 4.4 will not be able to write things onto an SD card, it is stuck to read only.

There are rumors of this being removed in the next version of android though.

I feel quite confused by all the things I've read.
Are all apps having problems with the SD card under Kitkat, or is it only 3rd party apps?
Some forums I've read of people using Kitkat not having any problems with apps accessing SD cards.
Does the problem come about when you try to access files on SD cards that were created pre-Kitkat? In other words, is the problem eliminated if you have a device that came bundled with Kitkat, as opposed to one that came with an earlier version of android & then you had to update to KK?
Is this a problem with trying to put apps on an SD card, or does the problem effect all kinds of files (media & apps)?
Will these problems be resolved when developers "properly" code their apps, or can these problems not be resolved?
And, a question I don't think anyone can answer right now: is google trying to eliminate SD cards from android, or are they honestly trying to patch security issues & want to retain SD cards in future versions of android?

@idroidnation: I guess you're using KK & not having any problems reading/writing to SD cards? There's stuff on this forum & other parts of the internet about this issue, but as a new user I cannot post the link!

Well, for example, on androidcentral's forums, see the thread entitled "Note 3: KitKat update disabling use of external micro SD Card"
