Using simcard in a different phone

Hi!

I have a phone with Virgin, but my contract finished.

I'd like to order a cheap android phone from the online store and just take its simcard put it in my other cellphone (both are from Virgin).

Would it work?

I do this because I live far away from Virgin Stores and that would be a good way of getting the simcard by mail.

Don't question the why what where, I just want to know will it work if I use the new simcard in my old phone? (Galaxy S)

It should. I've known many people who swap SIM cards between devices without ill effects. But I also know that there are SIM cards, mini SIM cards, and micro SIM cards. So I would imagine that you would have to ensure they're the same form factor or you have an adapter.
