Using the headphones

Im new to android, and this is probably a stupid question.

When my headphones are plugged in, the sound comes through the headphones and through my phone. How do I change it to just the headphones?

You sure your headphones are plugged in all the way?

If you are still getting noise out of the speaker on the phone when the head phones are plugged in, then you should try another set of head phones. If it still does that with a different set, then you have a hardware issue with your phone.

no it might be in as far as it can go... i have a nice pair of vmoda 2 headphones with mic that are compatible with blackberries and apple products..

but when i use it now on my captivate i can't get it all the way in as far as the ones that came in the box.. some of the gold plated tip is revealed with the vmoda but the boxed ones fit perfectly with no issues...

i think its samsungs way of selling their headphones?

It depends on what he means by "the sound"
Mine plays alerts through the handset and headphones but the call/media audio plays through the headset only.
