so I was asked today if my android mytouch 3g can be hooked up to my laptap to use it as a wireless router? I did some research and some say it can it be done but it's against tmobile terms of service? others say that it is not, how do you use the 3g as a wireless router? thanks for reading!

I did this with my rooted 2.1 phone, but my non-rooted 2.2 phone does not have the wireless hotspot option. It will do USB tethering.
It appears to me that to accomplish wireless tethering with 2.2 you need to have your phone rooted and install a wireless tethering app.
If you only need to have one computer use the tether, you can use the USB tether. Go to Settings, Wireless and you should see a USB tether option.

hmm...I dont, see airplane mode, wifi, wifi settings, blue tooth and blue tooth settings, vpn settings, mobile networks?

When you select Settings do you not see Wireless and Networks?

I do, the stuff I typed about the wifi and bluetooth, etc. is what comes up under that....nothing about the usb tether

I'm also running 2.2.1 with Baseband version 62.50SJ.20.17U_2.22.28.25 and Kernel version 2.6.32.9-27237-gbe746fb android-build@apa26 #1 and Build number FRG83D.
If I select Wireless and Networking I see Airplane mode, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi settings, Bluetooth, Bluetooth settings, Tethering, VPN settings, and Mobile networks in that order. If I select Tethering I see USB tethering and Help.
I hope that helps. Have you tried connecting your phone to your computer with the USB cable and then looking again at settings. I don't know that that would make a difference, but it is worth trying.

no...but that's what I was thinking I was going to try...thanks!

nope, connected the usb cord and it's still the same choices..do I possibly need to d/l some type of app to do this?

No. USB tethering is supposed to be built into 2.2. Wireless tethering does require downloading an app, but it also requires that your phone be rooted. I wonder if it has to do with your carrier. Who provides your cell phone service?

Mine too, so that's not the answer. I'm afraid I'm stumped. If I stumble across an answer I'll get back to you.
