Help Using TunedIn as an alarm

Hi there,
I've been trying to use TunedIn's alarm functionality as a wake up alarm. The problem I'm having is that it works intermittently, sometime it works and sometimes it doesn't. I couldn't figure out why.
I then loaded another app (ABC Australia) which has the same functionality. Unfortunately it also only worked sometimes as an alarm, again sometimes it works and sometimes not.
Emails requesting support from both apps have gone unanswered.
My only conclusion is that there must be a problem with my phone rather than the apps. Anyone got any idea where I should look to find the problem?

What device do you have? Is it Rooted? Which version of Android? Does the alarm functionality of the app require an internet connection and do you have a pretty strong one or is it flakey?

Sorry, I should have provided more info initially.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4. Running Android 4.4.2. I'm not sure about rooted/unrooted, but I got the phone directly from my provider and I haven't messed around with it so I assume it's still rooted. I could be very wrong though.
The app requires a internet connection to work, but I have a very strong wifi connection, plus the phone's data if necessary.
