using unlocked Android phones

This is a very basic question however I am not a tech savy person, so please forgive me. I am living in China and want to buy an unlocked Magic or G1 to use here. I do not have 3G and would just use my SIM card from the Chinese carrier to make phone calls. I would want to check my email using wireless internet. I would not have a data plan.

My friends here have the iphone and they can do all that I mentioned about.

Will I be able to do the same with an unlocked Android phone? I have read that you need a data plan even with an unlocked G1. Is this true? What about other Android phones such as the Magic.

In summary I would make phone calls using the prepaid SIM card and use wireless internet for email and surfing the net.

you would not need to buy the data plan for an unlocked phone. If you get an unlocked phone it should work with your sim card and it will be able to use wifi for email and internet. You may have to contact your service provider to change Apn's if needed. I'm not exactly sure how signing in to your google account works on unlocked phones and if it lets you sign in using wifi.

So in summary, yes it will work, but not sure how it will be setup.

One more question for unlocked Android phones -

Will the OTA updates be available for unlocked phones as well ? So far what I've heard is Google pushing it to network provider and then they push it thru...But how will it work for unlocked phones ?

As long as your phone is NOT rooted OTA updates will be available.

What about paid apps on the market? Is that only available through a dedicated carrier?

I've been in contact with o2, meteor, and 3 in ireland and none of them know if they're going to have the samsung galaxy, so i was just going to get it unlocked....

Getting apps can be dependent on your Carrier and by the Developer ... The app can be marked for specific markets ... and the carrier can also block apps as it chooses ..

The market app should prompt you to set up a google payment account (not the carrier) (however the data is carrier related) Paypal is currently not available and yes you will need a CC to set up the Google Payment Account
